Evaluating Rob Thomson’s Future with the Philadelphia Phillies
Rob Thomson has officially exhausted every bit of patience the Philadelphia Phillies fan base had in 2023.
The baseball journeyman earned himself some clout in 2022. A trip to the World Series after taking over midseason on an interim basis will certainly lead to the benefit of the doubt for a manager.
However, the struggles of the 2023 season have turned the tide. Is the situation bad enough for the front office to consider making another change?
The Rob Thomson Contract Question
Pat Egan spoke on The John Kincade Show about a scenario that could certainly put Thomson’s job in jeopardy.
“If they miss the playoffs with what they did in the offseason and what they did last season – and he was a big part of it – but with all the star power they have, with the expectations that they have, you can’t convince me all of a sudden he’s going to change next season…To me, it seems like, for this season, we’ve seen why this guy was never given an opportunity.” -Pat Egan
Egan couldn’t excuse the poor fundamentals, outrageous baserunning mistakes, and repeated sloppy mistakes in the field. The poor performance has erased the benefit of the doubt within the local media and the fan base.
The Phillies limped out of the gates to a 25-32 start. A strong 30-game stretch from June 3-July 7 has officially dissipated. A brutal series loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates from June 28-30 and an implosion on August 2 against the Miami Marlins have pushed the situation to the brink.
The organization became vulnerable to this spot because of the Rob Thomson contract decision they made during the offseason. They ripped off the interim tag and signed him to a two-year deal through 2024. The short-term commitment wasn’t the greatest vote on confidence.
If the Phillies miss the postseason, they’ll need to consider moving on.
Mark DeRosa As A Potential Replacement
John Kincade believes that Mark DeRosa will manage the Phillies or the New York Mets in 2024. Team USA’s skipper for the World Baseball Classic will certainly push for a major league job. When the Philadelphia media turns on a local coach or manager, upper management takes it seriously.
The Phillies still sit in the thick of the Wild Card race with under two months remaining in the season.
They have a good chance to earn a playoff berth for the second straight season after missing for 10 consecutive seasons. The accomplishment would likely mean that Thomson will come back in 2024.
However, if they make the MLB Playoffs in the second or third National League Wild Card position, they’d play a three-game weekend series on the road.
If they lost the hypothetical series, how would the Phillies front office react? The decision to retain him would mean keeping a manager entering the final season of his contract in limbo. It’s the type of situation that leads to a lame duck running a baseball team on borrowed time.
There’s not enough history of the playoff format to know how MLB organizations view the quick exit. One thing is now certain. The Phillies have a serious question to answer about their manager.
