Baseball Insiders Should Encourage Optimism From Philadelphia Phillies Fans
After a short rest during the MLB All-Star Break, Philadelphia Phillies fans are gearing up for the second half of the 2023 season.
An inconsistent first half (plus eight games) has the Phillies in third place in the National League East and a half game out of the final NL Wild Card spot.
Manger Rob Thomson’s squad limped out of the gates to a dreadful 25-32 start. The fan base justifiably reacted with intense criticism. However, the Phillies followed an outrageous 8-7 loss to the Washington Nationals on June 2 with a long stretch of good baseball.
Some people demand urgency. Some people have been overly reliant on another second-half surge and a playoff hot streak. How should fans feel entering the second half?
The Sky Isn’t Falling
ESPN’s Buster Olney reminded Philadelphia Phillies fans to look at the big picture following that dreadful loss in the nation’s capital.
The Phillies since June 3rd:

2.96 ERA, more than half a run better than any other team.
They are eighth in scoring in that stretch.
They feel like they have a lot of offensive upside in front of them, with an expectation that Turner will have a better second half and…
The 2.96 ERA is especially reassuring. The starting pitchers struggled in the early months of the season, but they’ve settled into a much better rhythm.
The incredible passion of Philadelphia sports fans will inevitably drive reaction to hiccups like losing two of three to the Miami Marlins headed into the All-Star Break.
However, in the big picture, the Phillies have more talent than most teams in the NL Wild Card race.
Matt Gelb Talks Phillies
Matt Gelb of The Athletic joined Andrew Salciunas and Jamie Lynch, co-hosting The Anthony Gargano Show, to share his thoughts on the second half.
He pointed to an unfavorable first-half schedule that sent the Phillies on the road for 51 games, tied with the New York Mets for most in the majors. The flipside is a favorable late-season home schedule.
The health of Bryce Harper should help them improve from 18th in the majors in home runs. Gelb is also optimistic that Harper will be able to play first base, allowing Thomson some flexibility to use Kyle Schwarber as the DH.
Dave Dombrowski will likely beef up the roster with some additions leading up to the MLB Trade Deadline.
There’s certainly drawbacks to consider. It’s fair to wonder if the Phillies should have legitimate confidence in Aaron Nola a top starting pitcher. Gelb also mentioned the possibility of Jose Alvarado spending significant time on the IL.
“I think it’s going to be a little while (until Alvarado returns). This is a very similar issue that he missed about a month with earlier this year, and I think they might need to give him the same or even more time. It would be a big loss. He’s been really good for them. Gregory Soto’s going to have to step up.” -Matt Gelb
The Phillies enter a four-game series against the San Diego Padres at Citizens Bank Park this weekend.
Fans should know they’re in manageable shape to earn a postseason bid to defend the National League pennant.
