Rob Thomson Needs To Stop Sitting Bryson Stott Vs Lefites
Bryson Stott is having a breakout year. The 2nd year player has a slash line of .294/.331/.418/.749. He also has 13 steals to go with it. The counting numbers don’t jump off the page. But anyone who has watched him will tell you how impressive he has been. He almost always has a good at-bat. Even when he produces an out, it feels like he always at least made the pitcher work, or moved the runner over. So why is Stott not playing every day?
Yesterday’s game vs the Chicago Cubs marked the 4th time in June that Stott was not in the starting lineup. Why? Because Drew Smyly was on the mound. And Drew Smyly is a lefty. It was a trend for most of last year too. When the Phillies face lefties, Rob Thomson tends to sit Bryson Stott. Last year it was usually Edmundo Sosa replacing him at shortstop. But now that Stott is playing 2nd Base, it is Josh Harrison who fills in for him. The issue is Stott is hitting .321 vs lefties.
Thomson does the same thing with Brandon Marsh too, with Christian Pache playing Center when they play lefties. There it makes sense though. Marsh is hitting .217 vs lefties, and slugging under .400. But that is not the case with Stott. In fact, he hits lefties better than righties. Granted it is a smaller sample size.
A RUN!!!

I know Josh Harrison hit an HR last night. So at first glance, it feels like it paid off. But that is the exception to what has been the rule. This season his slash line is .233/.280/.326/.605. And it is even worse vs lefties. You are taking out one of your more dependable bats, and perhaps your best fielder, and replacing him with a guy who is struggling badly at the plate, and is not that great in the field anymore either.
I am fine with the Platoon in Centerfield. Marsh genuinely struggles vs lefties, and you have Christian Pache to fill in. At the very least, you know he will play great in center field. But that is not the case with Stott at 2nd. Not only are you taking out a productive bat vs lefties from the lineup, but you are also replacing him with someone who is a downgrade in every aspect of the game.
If it was just a one-time thing to get him a day off, fine. But he has sat vs 4 of 5 lefty starters this month. 4 times you took one of your better players so far this season out of the lineup. Enough. Bryson Stott has earned the right to play every day.
