PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - OCTOBER 03: Zack Wheeler #45 of the Philadelphia Phillies pitches during the first inning against the Miami Marlins in Game One of the Wild Card Series at Citizens Bank Park on October 03, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Ranger Suarez and the Phillies bullpen got the job done in Game 1. They shut out the Braves in Atlanta, the first time that has happened all season. And now the Phillies need just two more wins to knock the Braves out of the NLDS for the second season in a row. Which sets up a game 2 matchup of Zack Wheeler vs Max Fried. We already took a look at Max Fried’s numbers vs the Phillies. But how has Zack Wheeler pitched against the Braves?

After Wheeler’s most recent postseason start in game 1 vs the Marlins, his career ERA in the playoffs is now down to 2.55. He was credited for giving up 3 Earned Runs against the Braves in his game 2 start against them last year. But those numbers are thrown off by a fielding mistake by Rhys Hoskins that should have been called an error. Otherwise last season, he shut down the Cardinals, shutdown the Padres, though he did have one shaky start vs the Astros.

And if you look at his career vs the Braves, he has had a lot of success. In 27 starts, and across 170 innings, he has a 3.18 ERA vs the Braves. He also has 173 strikeouts. And in 3 starts against them this season, his ERA is 3.32. In two of those starts he shut the Braves down. Back in May, he threw 8 shutout innings with 12 strikeouts. Most recently he went 6 innings while allowing just 1 run. But there was one stinker in the middle of those, where he allowed 6 runs in 5 innings. That is the aberration though.

So what should we expect from him in game 2? Does he have a great history vs any of the Braves’ individual hitters? Or are some guys in the Braves Lineup who have had Wheelers number?
