It took the Braves forever to announce their game 3 starter. But we finally have an answer. It will be second-year pitcher Bryce Elder. He will be making his first-ever post-season appearance in front of a raucous Phillies crowd, with Aaron Nola out there for the Phillies.
The problem with Bryce Elder, is the Phillies have barely seen him. He has pitched against the Phillies just twice. The first time, back in June, he pitched 7 scoreless innings. More recently, he gave up 4 runs over 3.2 innings. In those 2 starts his ERA against the Phillies is 3.38
And that is kind of the story of how Bryce Elder’s whole season went. In the first half, he was great. He had a 2.97 ERA over his first 18 starts. His second half was awful though. Over his last 13 starts, his ERA was 5.15. His BAA rose by .020 points in the second half, and his WHIP rose .21 points. And in his last 3 starts, he gave up 13 runs over 12.1 innings. He last pitched on September 26th.
Now he is set to make his first-ever postseason appearance. It is very likely they have a short leash on him, and he only gets to see each Phillies hitter once. But it didn’t take the Phillies long to get to him the last time they saw him. And chasing him early could put serious strain on the Braves bullpen for tomorrow.
Because he has just 2 starts against the Phillies, the Phillies hitters do not have many at-bats against him. In fact, none of the Phillies players have more than 5 plate appearances against him. And with one of those games being a 7-inning shutout, the numbers don’t look too good for a lot of them, in that small sample size. Still, it is worth looking at how the Phillies have hit against him in the past.
