Just because the 53-man roster is set, does not mean the Eagles work is done. Howie Roseman loves to say it is really a 70-man roster. What gets them to that number is the Eagles Practice Squad. With the new rules, the Eagles have 16 spots they can fill with players they couldn’t quite fit on the roster, plus one more player with an International Exemption. That gives them 17 extra spots in total.

The Importance Of The Practice Squad

The practice squad is more important than ever. The new rules let teams activate players off the practice squad on gameday, without taking up a spot on the 53-man roster. The catch is you can only do it 3 times before you have to sign them to the roster. But it gives them extra flexibility they never had in the past.

Last season, we saw the Eagles make good use of it. Punter Arryn Siposs was never on the 53-man roster. Yet he was their punter for the first 2 games before the Eagles found an upgrade in Braden Mann. They then used that same trick with Mann for a few weeks before adding him to the 53-man roster.

This year they won’t do that with the punter, with Mann making the roster outright. But they likely will still use that with other players. Maybe activate an extra Center on gameday since they don’t have a true backup center on the 53-man roster. Maybe bring up someone to help on Special Teams. Or maybe just for extra depth somewhere they are dealing with an injury.

So who made the Eagles Practice Squad this year? Did they load up at any specific position? Did they grab someone cut by another team to stash away?

• TE- Jack Stoll

  One of the names on the roster is a familiar face. Stoll was signed by the Eagles as a UDFA back in 2021. He has been a backup TE for them since then, but became a free agent this off-season and signed elsewhere. But after the Giants cut him, the Eagles scooped him back up. With only 2 TEs on the roster, Stoll could be a guy who gets a gameday activation, especially with him being a solid blocking TE.

• C- Dylan McMahon

  McMahon was one of the more surprising cuts for the Eagles. Cutting him and Matt Hennessy left them without a true backup center. He was also the first draft pick cut by the Eagles year 1 since 2021. But cutting him was likely a calculated risk by Howie. They felt like they could get him on the practice squad, retain Center depth, but use the roster spot on someone else, maybe James Bradberry as they continue to work on moving him. It worked out, and now they could make him a gameday activation if they need a backup center.

• OG- Nick Gates

  Nick Gates did not make the cut, but he will make the practice squad. It sounds like he will be on the team for week 1. Adam Schefter is reporting that Nick Gates will be an activation in week 1 for the game in Brazil. Giving the Eagles some extra depth along the O-Line.

• DT- Gabe Hall

  The Eagles did not have the most exciting class of Undrafted Free Agents. Which is why no UDFAs made the 53-man roster this year. But at least 1 will stick around on the Practice Squad. DT  Gabe Hall is joining the practice squad, giving the Eagles an extra year to see what they have in him.

• TE EJ Jenkins

  Many thought EJ Jenkins had won the TE3 job. It turns out, they didn’t even keep 3 on the roster. But they still kept Jenkins around on the practice squad. We will see if he gets a chance at some point, but they at least keep him around the team for now.

• S- Andre Sam

  Another UDFA sticks around. Sam did not do enough to win a job, even though the Eagles kept 5 Safeties if you count James Bradberry. But he still gets a chance on the practice squad, with the hope he can grow into something more down the road. He flashed a bit in the summer, so it is nice to see him stick around.

• LB -Oren Burks (Moved to 53-Man Roster)

  Oren Burks has proven he can play linebacker in the league. But an injury had him off to a slow start, and he could not crack the team. Still, we saw him contribute to a good Niners defense last year. If one of the Eagles Linebackers struggle, or get hurt, we could see him on the roster at some point.

• WR- Parris Campbell

  The Eagles hoped Parris Campbell would be the WR3. He didn’t flash much in camp, and they traded for Jahan Dotson. He wound up not even making the team. But he will stick around, for now, on the practice squad.

• RB- Tyrion Davis-Price

  In 2022, Tyrion Davis-Price was a 3rd round pick. By the end of 2023, the 49ers cut him. He joined the eagles training camp this season, but obviously there was not much room for a RB to crack the roster. But it pays to have depth, especially with Saquon having an injury history, so they keep Davis-Price around.

• QB- Will Grier

  Will Grier never had much of a chance to make the team. The common thought was he was here to help Kellen Moore implement his system. It seems he will continue to help from the practice squad. The Eagles brought him back, giving them 4 QBs between the 70 players on either roster.

• WR- Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint

  The Eagles apparently tried hard to sign Rosemy-Jacksaint as a UDFA, the Commander got him first though. But they apparently never lost interest. After he was cut by the Commanders, the Eagles scooped him up and added him to their practice squad, per Andrew DiCecco.

• LB- Brandon Smith

  Smith spent the last season on the Eagles Practice Squad. It seems he will return there this season. After being cut by the Eagles, the former Penn State LB returned to be on the eagles Practice Squad.

• S- Caden Sterns

  Sterns was a 5th round pick for the Broncos back in 2021. He was cut back in early August though. He spent a few days with the Panthers, before being cut again, then scooped up by Philly. Now he will settle for a spot on the Practice Squad. He is 1 of 2 safeties on the 17-man squad.

• * OT- Laekin Vakalahi

  Vakalahi is an interesting case, as he is sticking around because of the International Exemption. Teams can now keep an extra international player. The Eagles hope that he can follow in the footsteps of his teammate, and fellow Australian, Jordan Mailata. It is worth the chance, and now keeping around doesn’t mean giving him a roster spot like it did with Mailata.
