Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy protection last weekend after unsuccessful attempts to revive the brand. As of this past Wednesday (April 26), the big box store began its liquidation sale. Unfortunately, the company also announced that they will not be accepting the iconic big blue coupons at check out during the clearance sale. They will continue to accept gift cards through May 8th.
Step in savvy competitors. A handful of nationwide companies saw an opportunity and pounced. They were noticing the attention grabbing headlines that Bed Bath & Beyond was making around the cease-coupon announcement and they fired up a marketing campaign of their own.
Whether you know it or not, most stores will accept competitors coupons or match competitors prices. Of course this does not apply in extreme situations, like going out of business sales. But with the genius marketing that Bed Bath & Beyond established, these other stores are crazy not to ride the coattails.
The origin of the big blue coupon dates back to 1971, when the company, know at that time as Bed ‘n Bath, would sporadically put $5 off offers in the local news paper. In the late 90’s, a new executive brought the idea of mailing the coupons directly to consumers. Eventually, at their height, Bed Bath & Beyond was delivering a billion pieces of mail a year.
