EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY - OCTOBER 15: Jordan Davis #90 and Brandon Graham #55 of the Philadelphia Eagles celebrate after a sack during the second quarter in the game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on October 15, 2023 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Eagles finally lost their first game of the season. And to make it worse, they now have to face one of the best teams in the league to this point in the season. There is nothing special about the Dolphins defense. But there is a lot special about their offense. They are number one in almost every single stat, and in some cases number 1 by a lot.

Is some of that inflated by them beating up on teams like the Broncos and Dolphins? Sure. But people said the same thing about the Eagles last year, and they were still a Super Bowl team. The truth is they are just a very good offense, with elite speed, especially from a guy like Tyreek Hill.

Sean Desai basically told us how he plans to play the Dolphins Offense. In his Tuesday press conference, he had the line “Speed Kills, but Physciallity kills speed.” And playing physical starts at the D-Line. The best part of the Eagles’ Defense is the D-Line, especially the interior. Guys like Jalen Carter, Fletcher Cox, Jordan Davis, Josh Sweat, and Haason Reddick. The Bills had a similar approach and held the Dolphins to just 20 points.

And then the Eagles offense of course needs to do its job. We saw how the Commanders ran a very effective game plan last year against the Eagles offense. Just keep them off the field. Run the clock, and give them fewer possessions.

The talk all week has been that the Eagles have their work cut out for them. But the Dolphins are not some unbeatable juggernaut, and the Eagles are just as talented as they are. They are also 2.5 home favorites, which feels like an Eagles line.

But in order to pull off both of those gameplans, there are certain players who are going to have to be at their best.

Here are 6 Players Who Need Big Games For the Eagles To Beat The Dolphins:

  • Jalen Carter

The story of the game, win or lose, will revolve around the Eagles D-Line. Did they get to the QB? If they did, there is a decent chance we are talking about an Eagles win. If not? Weill Dolphins will be adding to their league-high numbers on offense. And Jalen Carter will play a huge role in that. Despite missing week 6, he still leads DTs in QB Pressures. Carter has been amazing this rookie season, and the Eagles need him to continue being amazing to beat the Dolphins on Sunday Night.

  • Haason Reddick

Reddick started the season slowly. But he has been a tear for the last few weeks. After two straight games with at least 2 sacks, he is now up to 5.5 on the season. Which is actually more than he had through the first 6 games last year. He didn’t get there until week 9 in 2022. And it may take another 2 sack game from him to slow down the Dolphins offense. The Bills showed the game plan to contain them is getting to Tua. And Reddick, like Carter, will play a big role in executing that game plan.

  • Jordan Davis

We know about the Dolphins’ dangerous passing attack. But they are also the best rushing team in the league. De’Von Achane is on the IR, but Raheem Mostert is not much of a step-down. In fact, he was the leadback at the start of the season and is still top 10 in every rushing stat. And while getting after the QB falls on the guys we just talked about, stopping the run starts with Jordan Davis. He has been among the best run-stuffers in the league up until now, but he and the Eagles’ league-leading rush defense get their toughest test yet against the Dolphins.

And of course, he can also help in getting to Tua, as we saw last week.

  • Devonta Smith

We know what AJ Brown will do. He now has 4 straight games with at least 120 receiving yards. Part of the problem for the Eagles has been Devonta Smith not putting up the same numbers he did last year. He had chances against the Jets. If he caught those two drops, with how much space he had, he would have ended the game with over 100 yards. Instead, he had just 44 yards, and just 50 in the past two games. He has been battling injuries, but they still need more from him. And this would be a good week to break back out to help the team keep up with the Dolphins.

  • D'Andre Swift

Swift had his first down week running the ball last week. In fairness, the Eagles got away from the run and didn’t give him much of a chance to get going. But the runs he did get were not going very far. A key part of the game plan this week though will have to revolve around taking up time and keeping the Dolphins off the field. Swift plays a huge part in that. If he does what he did against the Vikings and Bucs, the Eagles can keep the Dolphins’ offense in check just by making sure they do not have the ball very often.

  • Jalen Hurts

And finally, we come to the QB. Hurts was actually playing okay last week before the 3rd interception. I can’t really blame him for the first two. One was a Dallas Goedert drop, and the other was on Jack Driscoll for getting badly beaten off the edge. But the 3rd one was all on Hurts. He can’t make mistakes like that this week. It’s obviously a big game for him personally with Tua on the other sideline. But just in general he needs to have a bounce-back week to show he is still capable of playing as well as he did last year.
