It was one year ago today (Thursday) that sports shut down. Its one of those moments that you’ll never truly forget where you were when you found out that sports shut down. It started with the NBA, and then other sports followed suit. Eventually leagues adapted and persevered and were able to finish the season. But its definitely been weird. With a vaccine, we have light at the end of the tunnel. Sixers fans will be able to watch the team in person for the first time in over a calendar year this Sunday. Lets take a look back at the wild 365 days and how we got here.
A few days after joking around with journalists about the virus, touching their recorders and phones, Jazz center Rudy Gobert got a positive test while the team was in Oklahoma City. This ultimately led to the shut down
At first the NCAA planned on going through with the tournament but it didnt take long for them to realize it would be impossible. They ultimately cancelled it.
Tom Brady surprised a lot of football fans, and some former teammates, by leaving the only team hed ever known to forge a new path in Tampa. It would work out pretty well....
The NFL held its annual draft, but did so virtually. The Eagles took Jalen Reagor in the first round.
In the second round the Eagles shocked the NFL world taking QB Jalen Hurts. Little did they know the can of worms this selection would open up
Major League Baseball looked like it wouldnt have a season. But a last second deal between the league and the players association set up a 60 game sprint
WIth fans forced out of the stadiums they were replaced with cardboard cutouts. It became a trend with MLB and NFL teams
The NBA found their bubble home in the most magical place on earth. Disney World. The bubble was a huge success
After claiming they were "built for the playoffs" the Sixers were swept in four games. Their Disney stay was as short as Gina Carano
The Sixers sweep ultimately got Brett Brown fired after a very disappointing season with the team that had high expectations.
Following the NBA's lead the NHL created a bubble of their own. Heading to Toronto and Edmonton. The Flyers secured the #1 seed after the round robin.
The Flyers came up short in their quest for the cup. Losing to the New York Islanders in 7 games. But with such a young core there is reason for optimism on Broad Street.
The Phillies offense showed up for the 60 game sprint, but the Phillies bullpen did not. The team had the worst bullpen in the history of the game and it ultimately cost them a playoff spot.
The LA Lakers came out of the Disney Bubble with the championship. Defeating our old friend Jimmy Butler and the Heat
The Union came out of the break scorching hot. Winning the clubs first trophy, the Supporters Shield, for best record in the MLS
After a very disapointing 2019 season that saw the Lightning win the Presidents trophy (most points) and then lose in the first round, the team rebounded in the bubble to bring the cup to Tampa
The NFL Season kicked off and the Eagles played the Washington Football team. They blew a 17 point lead which was a precursor to how the season would play out
The Dodgers defeated the Rays to win the World Series. The win wasnt without controversy however as Justin Turner, who tested positive during the game, headed back out onto the field to celebrate with his teammates.
In a move to show the team is serious about winning, the organization hired former NBA Champion, and Coach of the Year Doc Rivers as the teams new head coach
The NHL Draft went virtual and with the 23rd overall pick the Flyers selected Tyson Foerster from the Barrie Colts
In a huge move the Sixers brought in respected NBA front office exec Daryl Morey to be the teams new president of basketball operations. One of the moves he, along with GM Elton Brand orchestrated...Bringing in Dwight Howard
The Philadelphia Union made a nice run at the MLS cup but ultimately came up short. Losing in the playoffs to the New England Revolution 2-0
In a slew of moves the Sixers ushered out Al Horford and his bad contract and brought in sharp shooter Seth Curry, along with veteran winner Danny Green
With the 21st Pick, in the 2020 NBA Draft....the Philadelphia 76ers select....Tyrese Maxey from the University of Kentucky
In Week 12 Doug Pederson had seen enough and pulled starter Carson Wentz for Jalen Hurts. It would be the last game Wentz ever played for the Eagles
The SIxers kicked off the 2020-2021 campaign with a big 108-99 vicrtory against the Boston Celtics. They currently sit atop the East.
After initially it looked like Doug Pederson would return, he was fired on January 11th. He lasted five seasons but brought Philly its first ever Super Bowl
The Flyers started their quest for the cup with a 6-3 win against the Penguins. The team is currently on the outside looking in on a playoff spot
The fans chanted it. Bryce Harper put it on a T-shirt! And in late January the Phillies inked the best catcher in baseball to a 5 year, $115.5 million dollar contract.
The Eagles went off the board with this one, hiring Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni to be the teams new head coach. His first presser was less than impressive but it can only go up from there!
Tom Brady led his Tampa Bay Bucs to their second Super Bowl in Franchise History proving it was Brady, and not Belichick
The Eagles pulled the trigger on a long speculated deal, sending Carson Wentz to Indianapolis for a 2020 3rd round pick and a 2021 conditional 1st.
Things could certainly change but Joel Embiid became the odds on favorite to win the MVP. This came after a game tying shot against the Utah Jazz before the All-Star Break.
Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons wanted to look good for the All-Star game in Atlanta. But their barber was in contact with someone who tested positive. Its left the 2 stars status in doubt moving forward
In the first sign of normalcy in the last year, the Flyers were the first team to welcome fans back into the arena's. The Sixers will do the same this Sunday!
