The Philadelphia Museum of Art will host “Rising Up: Rocky and the Making of Monuments,” an exhibition built around the famous Rocky statue that will debut with a public opening event on Friday, April 24.
Guests are invited to preview the next exhibition from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. throughout the museum's main building. It is offered through pay-what-you-wish admission, a pricing model that will remain in effect through Sept. 4.
Here's a look at some of the activities scheduled for the exhibition's opening:
- A pop-up studio on the East Balcony will invite visitors to craft mini “Rocky” statues from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- In the Great Stair Hall, the program will feature performances by the Philly All Stars Marching Band and Project Positive. A DJ set by DJ xtina will be held throughout the evening.
- A book-signing opportunity with sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg will take place from 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. in the Dorrance Galleries retail shop.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
According to a PhillyVoice report, “Rising Up” blends art, sports, and popular culture to illuminate lesser-told stories around the Rocky statue. These stories include Philadelphia boxing legends and immigrant communities, while exploring the future of public spaces. It is curated by Paul Farber, director and co-founder of Monument Lab.
The exhibition coincides with the Rocky film's 50th anniversary, World Cup matches in Philadelphia, and semiquincentennial activities for the 250th anniversary of the United States.
