With less than three months to go until Philadelphia hosts select matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the international sports organization has canceled hundreds of hotel room reservations.
NBC10 Philadelphia reported that FIFA pulled approximately 2,000 hotel reservations in Philadelphia from an initial 10,000-room block, according to a statement by Ed Grose, the CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association.
Grose explained to NBC10 that FIFA had a 120-day period to cancel. FIFA didn't offer any details behind the cancelations, and, according to Grose, they aren't required to provide a reason.
According to a Travel and Tour World report, the rooms represent various price points, from luxury boutiques in Rittenhouse Square to hotels located close to the South Philadelphia Sports Complex.
“The city still has hotel inventory for visitors, but now it can open 2,000 rooms for fans coming to Philadelphia,” Grose stated.
As one of the host cities for the World Cup, Philadelphia will entertain guests from June 11 to July 19. Six matches will be played in the City of Brotherly Love, including the following:
- June 14: Ivory Coast vs. Ecuador
- June 19: Brazil vs. Haiti
- June 22: France vs. TBA
- June 25: Curacao vs. Ivory Coast
- June 27: Croatia vs. Ghana
- July 4: Teams TBA
