Then Bryce Harper stepped to the plate and gave his team hope again. The Phillies slugger had struggled throughout the whole tournament, managing just a handful of hits. But in the biggest moment of the tournament so far, he showed up. Harper crushed a 432-foot blast to center field, tying the game with 1 swing.
Those good vibes did not last. Aaron Judge struck out in the next at-bat to send it to the top of the 9th. The US bullpen immediately gave the lead back. Garrett Whitlock gave up a leadoff walk. Then all it took was a steal and a double, and Venezuela got the lead back.
The bottom of the 9th looked much like the first 7 innings for Team USA. Kyle Schwarber struck out, Gunnar Henderson popped up, and then Roman Anthony ended the night and the tournament with the USA's 10th strikeout of the night. Venezuela won 3-2, and became World Baseball Classic champions for the first time.
USA Comes Up Small In World Baseball Classic
Things seemed to play out well for USA leading up to the night. They got away with a near-fatal mistake in the group stage to sneak in, thanks to Italy beating Mexico. Then they saw Japan go out in the Quarter Finals. They managed to shut down a dangerous Dominican Republic Lineup in the semis to set up what felt like an ideal matchup with Venezuela in the finals, who lacked pitching depth.
But in the end, it was the lineup that let America down. Despite having All-Stars up and down the lineup and on the bench, the group never quite got going. Bryce Harper struggled before tonight. Aaron Judge went 2 for 11 in the Elimination rounds. And in total, 5 of the 9 starters in tonight's lineup had a Slg under .400 over the whole tournament.
It marks two straight World Baseball Classics where USA lost by 1 run in the Finals. They won it back in 2017, but came up short the last two times
