The Philadelphia 76ers will face the Dallas Mavericks at 8:30 p.m. EST on Thursday. Both teams are continuing to find their footing after dealing with a long list of injuries, with the Sixers finally getting their backcourt healthy while the Mavs have benefited from the return of forward Anthony Davis. With that health comes good competition, so this game promises to be one of the most entertaining games of the night.

Surviving overtime against the Memphis Grizzlies is not an ideal way to lead into the new year, but that is exactly what the Sixers managed to do in their most recent game. That victory snapped a three-game losing streak, with the most recent Philly win prior to that coming against the Mavericks. In that contest, the Sixers received a monumental effort from guard Tyrese Maxey, who scored 38 points. A couple of double-digit scorers off the bench were also necessary to spur the Sixers to victory without center Joel Embiid. Embiid should be healthy for this matchup, providing Philadelphia with a significant leg up.

There are several discouraging factors when considering the Mavericks' position in this game. They faced a hobbled Philly team last time and still failed to get things done, and Davis and fellow forward Cooper Flagg each played well in the contest. One thing they have working in their favor is that this game will be played on their home court, a significant upgrade for Dallas. However, accounting for Embiid will be a massive challenge, especially since the Mavs were unable to contain Maxey even without Embiid on the floor.

76ers vs Mavericks Prediction and Pick

This is a difficult game to predict given the magnitude of the Mavericks' injury report. If Davis does not play, it would be surprising to see Dallas come into this game as anything less than an eight-point underdog. If that is the case, the correct play would be to count on the Sixers to cover against a Mavs team that is undermanned and outgunned.

If Davis does end up taking the floor, everything changes. Embiid's return does loom large, but with Davis on the floor, Dallas has proven itself to be one of the better defensive teams in the NBA. The spread will likely shrink to three or four points, but even with that line, the best play is to take the Mavericks to cover. Dallas has shown that it can contend with the best teams in the NBA when healthy, so keeping things close with the Sixers is well within its wheelhouse.
