Jalen Hurts put his support for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) on his feet when he stepped on the field in custom cleats for the Philadelphia Eagles game against the Chicago Bears on Friday, Nov. 28.
Hurts sported custom cleats as part of the NFL's "My Cause My Cleats" initiative, honoring the young patients served by CHOP.
A few weeks before the game, Hurts visited CHOP, where he met with patients Angelo, Amir, and Sophia. Hurts gave the three kids bags of Eagles merchandise and sat with them as they designed cleats on sheets of paper.
"We shared a great time. We were able to scheme up some shoes that we will all debut versus the Bears. I can't wait for it. Jaws were dropping, and disbelief was all in their faces. They didn't even know what to feel when I told them that I'd be linking up with them before the game. I canvt wait to see them," Hurts said in an Eagles in a news release.
According to the Eagles, this year is Hurts' second consecutive year partnering with CHOP for "My Cause My Cleats." Last year's experience inspired Hurts to return this year to work with CHOP.
"They look at me like I'm a superhero, like I wear a cape and score touchdowns and make plays, and I rock the number 1, but they're really the superheroes because they're going through things that I couldn't imagine," he continued. "You talk about perseverance. You talk about resilience ... the words perseverance, resilience, grit, endurance. I can't compete with any of that through my own testimony."
Beyond this initiative, Hurts has a long history of involvement in the Philadelphia community. He has made a $200,000 donation toward HVAC systems in 10 Philadelphia schools and hosted events with the Jalen Hurts Foundation and Make-A-Wish.
