The Broad Street Bullies have lived based on the hope of their late head coach Fred Shero to “walk together forever” after their Stanley Cups in the 1970s. However, the beloved Bullies lost an integral member of the Philadelphia Flyers family just three weeks before the 2025-26 NHL season.
Bernie Parent passed away on September 21st, and the Flyers immediately planned to honor the best goalie in franchise history and one of the most iconic ambassadors for the Orange & Black.
The Flyers have passed Parent’s used goalie mask from the 2012 Winter Classic Alumni Game to the player of the game after each win this season, to follow up a creative NHL trend in recent years for each team to present its individual award.
The Bernie Parent Goalie Mask
Flyers captain Sean Couturier earned the Bernie Parent goalie mask after the home opener. He talked about the Hall of Famer’s legacy after the victory.
“I think Bernie Parent did a lot for this organization, for this city, was involved off the ice as well in the community. I think it was just a great effort in his honor. He’ll definitely be missed around here. We always used to see him around here at the games. He always had that quality (to) just lighten everything up and put a smile on everyone’s face.”

The Flyers plan to honor Bernie Parent this season well beyond just a goalie mask. They’ll host a celebration of life on November 21 and a pregame tribute the following night before a matchup against the New Jersey Devils.
Only the Lord Saves More Than Bernie
Parent isn’t the best goaltender in NHL history, but he might’ve had the best two-year stretch the game has ever seen in 1973-74 and 1974-75.
The legendary netminder won consecutive Vezina Trophies as the NHL’s best goaltender. He followed up the excellent regular seasons with even more dominant postseason performances that earned him consecutive Conn Smythe Trophies as the playoff MVP. The Flyers lifted their only two Stanley Cups on the back of the best goaltender in the world.
Parent’s legacy as an all-time great goaltender, a Stanley Cup champion who cemented the franchise’s lure, and an ambassador to the Flyers community lives on after his death in 2025.
