Winning a Super Bowl pays off. Not just in the sense that you get to celebrate a championship, but it actually adds value to your franchise. Sportico released its annual ranking of NFL teams by franchise value, and the Eagles made a jump up. After being ranked the 8th most valuable team last year, they are now 6th, with an estimated value of $8.43 billion.

They are up from $6.75 billion last season. That is a 25% increase in their value in a single fiscal year. Only the Giants and Rams saw a bigger jump.

You look around the top 10, though, and you begin to think winning has less to do with value than we thought. The Eagles, Rams, and Patriots are the only teams in the top 10 to have won a Super Bowl this decade. The unquestioned best franchise of the past decade, the Chiefs, are all the way down at 16. Not to mention teams that have been perennial losers in the last 10 years, like the Giants, Cowboys, Jets, and Raiders, all cracking the top 10.

Market size is the deciding factor here. You can be a terrible team and rake in money. Likewise, you could be a highly competitive team like the Bills and be one of the least valuable teams in the league.

Philadelphia is not New York City, but they are still a top 5 market in the NFL. The only markets larger than Philly are LA, Chicago, and NYC. Boston is also sizable, and 2 decades of NFL dominance to help build them into a more National brand. The Cowboys have been a massive national brand since the 80s. Even if they have won nothing in the past 3 decades.

The Eagles have a chance to do that themselves. They have the big market, and they have now won 2 Super Bowls in the past several years. Win another, and they could become a National Brand like the Patriots and Cowboys.

Jeffrey Lurie recently sold a minor stake in the team at a valuation of $8.3 billion. Even since then, the value has gone up a bit. Add on their apparent plans to build a new stadium, one that could hopefully host Super Bowls, and we could continue to see them grow at an accelerated rate.
