Huff signed with the Eagles last offseason. He was their most expensive offseason addition, getting a 3-year, $51 million contract. He didn't come close to living up to that. After racking up 10 sacks for the Jets the previous year, he managed just 2.5 for the Eagles.
In fact, he hardly saw the field. An injury saw him miss 5 games. Even before and after that, his snap count dwindled with each passing week. Huff was already a rotational player when with the Jets. He lost snaps with the Eagles, and in the playoffs, he was out of their rotation entirely. He was inactive for the Super Bowl.
The 5th-year player was just never a fit for defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's scheme. He struggled to find his place on the Eagles' defense, and saw Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt take snaps away from him, even with a not very deep rotation on the Edge.
Huff was rumored to be on the trade block, but there was not much smoke before this news broke. Now he reunites with his former Head Coach, who is now back with the 49ers as the DC. Meanwhile, the Eagles get out from under his big contract and get a pick back in return. Win-win for Bryce Huff and the Eagles.
It does leave the Eagles a bit lacking in Edge Depth. But Huff may not have factored in to that anyway if last year was any indication. They currently have Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, Azeez Ojulari, Josh Uche, and rookie Antwaun Powell-Ryland Jr.
As Schefter reported, the Bryce Huff trade can't actually be finalized until after June 1st.
Per Field Yates, the Eagles save $7.95 million in cash and a whopping $15 million in cap space for 2025.
