Two of the MLB's best teams will show down when the Los Angeles Dodgers make the trip out east to face the Philadelphia Phillies. These teams are 13-1 combined, with each squad leading their respective divisions. April baseball does not get much better than this.

The Dodgers have made their way to the top of their rotation once again, so ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto is set to take the bump for this series opener. The prized Japanese asset has been excellent through both of his 2025 outings, allowing only three runs over 10 innings. The Phillies lineup that awaits him will be Yamamoto's toughest test so far.

While Los Angeles has the privilege of trotting out their ace, Philadelphia will be forced to count on Jesus Luzardo here. Luzardo opened the season well against the Washington Nationals, waving 11 batters over five innings of work. Repeating that performance against a Dodgers team that has been deadly at the plate would be another feather in the young pitcher's 2025 campaign.

Dodgers vs Phillies Predictions and Picks

RB Hayek of ClutchPoints writes, "The Dodgers are 6-2 against the spread, while the Phillies are 4-1 against the spread. Ultimately, neither team has played enough games yet to provide a real distinction. But the Dodgers are still undefeated. Thus, no one has been able to beat them yet. I think that is going to change eventually. After sweeping the first eight games, the Dodgers are overdue for a loss. While they handled the Atlanta Braves at home, the Phillies in Philadelphia will be significantly tougher. I can see the Phillies finding a way to not only hand the Dodgers their first loss but also cover the spread at home."

At first glance, betting against the streaking Dodgers is not a particularly appealing prospect. However, there are a couple of factors that support Hayek's pick. Los Angeles has hit significantly worse against left-handed pitching, and Luzardo is a southpaw. Additionally, Luzardo was far more impactful at home than he was on the road in 2024, earning better stats in nearly every category.

It also helps that the Phillies should see a heavy dose of the Los Angeles bullpen. Yamamoto went five innings in both of his previous starts, despite pitching quite effectively. It is fair to expect a similar outing in terms of length. When Yamamoto is pulled, the Dodgers will be shorthanded out of the pen, thanks to injuries to Philips and Kopech. The Phillies should be able to cover at the very least.
