Philadelphia Eagles’ Running Back Saquon Barkley Receives Key to His Hometown
Crowds packed the PPL Center on March 9, 2025, as Allentown officials gave Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley the city’s highest honor. The excited crowd watched as their hometown hero got the key to the city on what was officially named “Saquon Barkley Day.”
Fans from all over Pennsylvania packed into the venue to see the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year. The event also served as a fundraiser, with half of ticket sales going to the Michael Ann and Saquon Barkley Hope Foundation’s youth education and sports programs.
Inside PPL Center, Mayor Matt Tuerk led an energetic ceremony where fans took pictures and got autographs from the Coplay native. For Barkley, who just signed a huge deal with the Eagles, the honor meant a lot.
With its focused programs, the foundation helps students who need extra support. Their work includes everything from personal tutoring to giving sports equipment to local schools.
Whitehall Township’s Mayor Joseph Marx joined other local leaders in celebrating the athlete’s impact on the community. The event highlighted Barkley’s strong ties to the area where he first fell in love with football.
During a personal Q&A session, fans got to know their local hero better. They learned firsthand about his journey from high school games to NFL stardom.
“I know I wouldn’t have made it, accomplished the things I’ve accomplished so far in my career without the love and support from you guys, especially my Whitehall folks,” said Barkley, according to wfmz.com.
The key to the city carries on a long-standing tradition in Allentown, recognizing those who make the city better.
