The Phillies Hit Rock Bottom, Do They Have A Leader?
The Phillies may have hit a new 2024 rock bottom with their 5-0 loss to the Marlins. They are 7-16 since the All-Star break. For the first time in a long time, there were boos raining down at Citizens Bank Park. We have seen this movie before. It seems that when the Phillies stop hitting, they do it collectively.
If I knew why it happens, I would be able to solve it, but we saw it in the 2022 World Series when they were no hit at home with a 2-1 lead in the series. We saw it again in games 6 and 7 of the NLCS against the inferior Diamondbacks. We are now seeing it again for an extended period. It seems that the team is lost, and nobody has any answers.
Who Is The Phillies Leader?
When times get tough, in sports and in life, we look to our leaders. In life it can be a parent, it can be a pastor, it could be a coach. In sports you look to your star players first then to the coach/manager.
Bryce Harper is a superstar player. He is a two-time MVP with tons of moments. Is he a leader though? What is he doing to get things turned around?
Trea Turner, the other $300 million man is in a big slump and doesn’t seem to have any answers either. Last year the fans bailed him out with the standing ovation. What will he do to reward them in 2024?
Kyle Schwarber is said to be the leader, and he has played well during the recent Phillies’ struggles, but that hasn’t been passed on to his teammates. This is mostly on the players. Baseball isn’t like football, but they are not the only ones to blame.
Rob Thomson is a good manager, but he hasn’t done anything to get things going. He can’t swing the bat for them, but he must do something. He was the manager during the offensive collapse in 2022 and 2023. He has been too passive in 2024. He is letting the Phillies flounder and not doing anything.
I am not talking about team meetings. If these guys don’t know what they need to do, then the issue is with them. They shouldn’t need a meeting. There needs to be a lineup change though. Trea Turner shouldn’t bat 2nd. Stott should not bat above 8 ever anymore, and he shouldn’t play every day. Marsh shouldn’t be in the lineup at all. Maybe that would wake these guys up.
We were told that the Phillies would be good in 2024 because of their talent and camaraderie. The talent is letting them down, and the camaraderie is making them too comfortable. The Phillies lack leadership, and it could undo what appeared to be a great season.
