Why The Eagles Will Be The 2024 NFC Top Seed
On the day the pre-season schedule begins I see no reason to hold this back any longer. If you’re going to be bold, you need to make sure that there are no crazy disclaimers. Let me just get this off my chest. Barring any catastrophic injury that we don’t see coming, the Philadelphia Eagles will once again be the top seed in the NFC.
I know that will sound aggressive and many will disagree, but allow me to make my case of why this team will once again have the ability to win two home games to get to Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans.
The 2024 Schedule is far more manageable than in 2023
Last year we obsessed on “the gauntlet”. This year there is no gauntlet. The schedule is still challenging but it is hardly daunting. They should be able to pencil in at least 11 wins.
The Cowboys might have already “Cowboyed”
Dallas has its top three players on the roster all in a contract dispute. Every coach on the team is working under a one-year contract. This could be a highly motivated group or a distracted toxic stew. How do you expect the Cowboys to react? I’ve seen enough to know the answer.

The SF 49ers are a team in turmoil
The defending NFC Champions are trying to deal their top WR in Brandon Aiyuk right now. They had to let some depth talent walk while seeing their offensive line in flux due to more contract squabbles. Throw in the rumored “Super Bowl Hangover” which I don’t believe in and the 49ers will find it harder to navigate their schedule this time around.
The Detroit Lions aren’t sneaking up on anyone this time
Last year they were a feel-good, spunky story. This time around the Packers will be better and the Bears and Vikings look to be improving. They have a target on their backs. They should still be very good, but with expectations comes pressure. I’m calling for a slight step back.
The Packers are going to be dangerous but…
It’s going to be a tough challenge to start the season in Brazil vs the upstart Packers. I’m still angry the Eagles most pivotal NFC “home game” will be played away from South Philly. A win in the opener will secure that tie-breaker and keep the Birds on path for home-field advantage. By the way, even if they lose the opener they will still win the top seed.
The best team in the NFC South won’t be good enough
The Falcons look like the best option to come out of the South. They should be improved, but are hardly a roster with pedigree. A win in Week 2 at home should set up a nice advantage if they load up the wins against the South’s weak sisters.
Most of all, the Eagles are a team that will play with a purpose
Nick Sirianni has to prove that he is worthy of being the leader of this franchise long term. Kellen Moore wants to be a Head Coach and a great season would help that cause. Vic Fangio wants a crowning achievement before retirement. Jalen Hurts needs to show he deserves to be in the MVP conversation. These are worlds and collective ambitions colliding and it will all be to our benefit.
