The Phillies Are Great Enough To Survive Without JT Realmuto
The Phillies will survive. The team sits 10 games ahead of the Atlanta Braves, and 26 games over .500. J.T. Realmuto needs a knee surgery, but it is not time to panic. The team as a whole, has proven that up to this point this year.
Let’s start with an easy example, Trea Turner, who was arguably the Phillies best hitter when his hamstring gave out. Did we see panic? NO! What we did see is the next man-up mentality. That next man in Turner’s case was Edmundo Sosa.
Sosa has been spectacular filling in. Not only has his defense has been good, he has come up with some big hits and consistent AB’s. The Phillies really haven’t missed a beat since this injury came up.
Everyone Is Stepping Up For The Phillies
It is not just Sosa, guys need days off and the Phillies depth has been very good. Most times you look for the bench players to be just ok, but with this team, its different. They have come up in big spots and performed at the highest level.
Kody Clemens, in 39 at-bats has 7 extra base hits, including 3 homers and 10 RBIs. He wasn’t even with the club to break spring training. More recently, David Dahl came up from AAA and announced his presence immediately. In his first game up with the Phillies, he was 2-3 with a homer in a 3-1 win vs the Brewers. He also added a homer in the London Series!

Why bring all this up? Depth is important all year long for contending teams, and this just got real with Realmuto being out. What should we expect? We know Garrett Stubbs will do most of the catching and Rafael Marchan will be right behind him.
Obviously you dont expect these guys to pick up where J.T. Left off, but defensively is where they need to be sharp. It isn’t easy to control a pitching staff, especially one that is going as well as the Phillies. It will be all about studying your opponent and staying on the same page as the pitcher. Stubbs can do it but only for short spurts. Keeping these two healthy will be up to Rob Thomson.
Expectations may not be high but simply put, stay with your staff and be smart with your play. Depth is the name of the game, the Phillies have it!
