Memorial Day Standings Told A Story…But “Gauntlets” Await The Phillies
Waiting for one-third of the MLB schedule to play itself out allows you to formulate reasonable observations on how your team actually stands among their peers. This Memorial Day was a treat. 54 games into the Phillies schedule brings you to a few logical conclusions.
The Phillies are one of and may be the best team in baseball when all is said and done, but unlike the last two seasons, they maximized their opportunity to start a season positively.
Two years ago today the Phillies were firing Joe Girardi and hiring a relative unknown in Rob Thomson. It was an incredible salvage job and a miraculous run to the World Series. Another slow start in 2023 made them recreate the 2022 script. It ended in the NLCS this time around but the foundation for starting 2024 on a mission was laid. They answered that challenge and their 38-16 record sets them up with many advantages.
Don’t write off the Braves, even though they are six games back at the one-third pole. The Ronald Acuna season-ending injury seems like a death blow to their divisional chances, but the last time they lost Acuna in 2021 it was a lead into their eventual World Series title. GM Alex Anthopolus has a great history of maneuvering his roster. Let’s not count any chickens just yet.
If the Phillies put up a strong June they most likely will create a bulletproof solution to any July struggles. Take a look at the three challenging stretches that await them. If they could get up to around 25-30 games over .500 before then it would prevent them (barring injuries) from any collapses.
The Phillies Start July With A Bang
7/2-7/4 at Cubs (3)
7/5-7/7 at Braves (3)
7/9-7/11 Dodgers (3)
Build up a big enough lead before July and it puts immense pressure on the Braves to sweep that holiday series. If you lead the Dodgers too it creates a scenario where “not getting swept” is an acceptable strategy and continues to run the clock down on their opponents.
It Won’t Get Harder Than This Stretch
7/22-7/24 at Twins
7/26-7/28 Guardians
7/29-7/31 Yankees
8/2-8/4 at Mariners
8/5-8/7 at Dodgers
8/8-8/11 at Diamondbacks (4)
Those 19 games are crazy tough. If the Phillies can see themselves to ten wins our October dreaming will become huge!
One Last Challenge To Survive
8/20-8/22 at Braves
8/23-8/25 at Royals
8/26-8/28 Astros
8/29-9/1 Braves (4)
These last 13 games should be the exclamation point. Survive and advance.
I’ll give you my bold prediction. Our September conversations on The Fanatic are going to center around how do the Phillies potentially keep their edge when a post season berth will already be secured.
