Andrew’s 3 Observations From The Phillies-White Sox Series
The Phillies just swept their second straight series after winning all three games against the White Sox in South Philadelphia this weekend. They are now winners of 6 straight games and 8 of their last 10. Before you get set to watch them take on the Reds, here are my 3 observations from their series with Chicago.
1 – Johan Rojas is being productive offensively
As someone who wanted him to start the season in Triple-A, this has been an incredibly pleasant surprise. In case you haven’t heard my reasoning, I did not want his confidence to take a hit if he was hitting well below .200 and had to eventually get sent down.
To me there is less of a toll if he started the season in the minors than there is being sent down. But as of right now, that isn’t even a concern. After a bad start to the season, Rojas has turned it around and more. Rojas sat the first game of the series against the White Sox, but started games 2 and 3. He went 5 for 8 in those 2 games, stole two bases, and scored 3 runs.
I would have been happy if he hit around .200 with his stellar defense, he is now hitting .264 on the season.
2 – Spencer Turnbull deserves a shot with the Phillies
We got news over the weekend that Taijuan Walker would be returning to the rotation. We may have watched Turnbull’s last start for the Phillies for a while and he was fantastic. In game 1 against the White Sox, Turnbull pitched 7 innings, struck out 6, walked only 2 batters, and allowed his first hit in the 7th inning.
Through 4 starts, Turnbull has a 1.23 ERA which is 5th best in the Majors, and a 0.77 WHIP which is 3rd best in the league. He did all of that just to get sent back to the bullpen now that a high priced free agent is returning to injury.
The reasoning for Turnbull to be the odd man out is the fact that he hasn’t pitched 60 innings in a season since 2019 and he is already at 22. They want to save his arm in case he is needed again. Either way, that is a tough sell to someone who has pitched brilliantly through 4 starts.
3 – Alec Bohm had a hell of a series
Game 1 was great for Alex Bohm, and he continued to play well in games 2 and 3. In game 1, Bohm hit 2 3-Run home runs, finishing with 6 RBI in the game. He then followed that up with a 1-3 game with 2 walks and 2 runs scored in game 2.
Finally in game 3, Bohm went 3 for 5 with an RBI. That gives you a total of 6-12, 2 home runs, 7 RBI, and 4 runs scored. Have yourself a weekend Alec Bohm!
