Buster Olney Picks The Phillies As Favorites To Win The World Series
The Phillies have come so close to the promised land these past two seasons. In 2022 they were 2 wins away from a World Series. Last season, they were 1 away from making it back to the World Series. They have come so close, only to miss out both times. But one famous name in the MLB world thinks this will be the year they get over that hump. Buster Olney is picking the Phillies to win it all this season.
Buster Olney joined Andrew Salciunas today to explain why the Phillies are his pick:
“They were the best team in the middle of last October. I was shocked when they didn’t win the World Series. I have not been in their camp this Spring, but I have talked to enough people over there to get the sense that this is a group that is hyper-focused. I have seen that dynamic play out with other teams. The 97 Yankees lose in a shocking way to Cleveland. They come back and have the greatest season ever. The Red Sox lose in the playoffs to the Yankees in 2003. They come back the next year with a vengeance. I think that plays. It is a factor.
They go into this season as one of the 3 best teams in the NL on paper. there is a lot more pressure on the Braves, who are the best regular season. There is a lot more pressure on the Dodgers because of what they spent this off-season. I think the Phillies will handle it better in October.”
Buster Olney is not the first person to point out how focused the Phillies are this off-season. Nearly every person we have talked to who has been at Phillies Spring Training has said the same thing. They are hungry, and taking this seriously. Not so seriously that they aren’t having fun anymore. That is a problem we saw the Eagles have this past season. They are still enjoying themselves and having fun. But serious enough that they know they need to do better this time.
Olney hedged his prediction by saying he is wrong a lot. He even mentioned that his son, a Braves fan, was relieved to hear his dad picked the Phillies. So take his prediction with a grain of salt. But it is nice to see the Phillies getting respect from around the league.
They are running back the same team as last year. Which could be taken as a bad thing given how this team came up short. But they were among the best teams already last season, and we may see young guys take another step to help them get over that humps. We also have a full season of Bryce Harper at 1st base which may help things.
