4 Tips To Unwind During Vacation
As we embark on our first real vacation as a couple since before my cancer diagnosis in 2023, it reminded me of tips that I learned years ago that have truly helped me to unwind when I’m off of work.
Like many of you in the listening audience, I lead a very busy life and tend to spend too much time on electronics. Whether it’s show prep, entertaining myself during down time, or the dreaded social media check, screen time zaps all of our brains. A beach vacation is the perfect time to leave the world behind as much as possible. Here is how I learned to do it.
Plan Ahead Properly
If you do this, it eliminates the need to do vacation tasks at the last minute. You may not be this planned out, but I find that it makes a trip more relaxing. Do you need cash for your trip? Get to the bank a few days early and have the cash separated in its own envelope. I’ll keep it in the safe and always grab lower denominations for tipping. If going to a resort, you can always have cash on hand and leave valuables in the safe.
Email Bouncebacks
Before leaving, tell everyone you are out of reach. When seeing these roadblock alerts, you phone rarely blows up with emails about issues that you’ll be able to handle when you return to civilization.
Leaving the Phone Behind
Just to keep myself from mindless scrolling, my phone doesn’t come with me to chill out near the water or the pool. My wife always carries hers in her beach bag in case of an emergency.
If you have kids back home, this gives you peace of mind. Just leave it in the bag. You can even bring your ear pods, but don’t need to scroll to listen to your music.
Lock Away All Other Devices
Use them for a cursory review of accounts daily. Leave the iPads and devices behind, but check your accounts quickly daily to give yourself assurance the world didn’t stop spinning without you.
Benefits
By Day 3, I’m usually feeling like someone has taken the clutter off of my brain desk. I rest easier and find myself far more relaxed. I also feel less desire to check in on the life back home. That’s a good thing, so don’t feel guilty.
Try these tips on your next beach vacation. I’ve been doing this for about 10 years and find it very beneficial.
