That is no longer the case. The new record belongs to Joel Embiid after he dropped 70 tonight against the Spurs.
By halftime, and in just 17 minutes, he had already racked up 34 points. But he continued to pile it on in the second half. And by the end of the 3rd he had 59. Once he checked back in during the 4th quarter, we were officially on watch for history. Embiid took nearly every shot, though he still found the time to also pick up assists in the quarter. Until finally with 1:41 left in the game, he got a steal, went the length of the floor, and laid it in to claim the franchise record.
It took Embiid only 41 shots to score 70. He made 24 of those shots, with just one coming from beyond the arc. Embiid also went 21-23 from the line.
Fans went out to get their first glimpse of another must see player in Victor Wembanyama. And they did get to see him put on a show. But It was Embid who stole the night and gave fans a show they will never forget. He is only the 9th player to ever score 70 points. Lebron James never did it. Michael Jordan never did it. Shaq never did it. But now Embiid has. He joins a rare club. And he is only the 2nd player to do it while playing fewer than 40 minutes, Damian Lillard being the first.
Embiid was already averaging a point per minute coming into the game. He scored nearly 2 per minute tonight. He also grabbed a casual 18 rebounds and 5 assists just to add to how special the night was.
If you are one of those fans who are out on the Sixers until they get out of the 2nd round, you are missing out on something very special. Not just tonight, but all season long. It is his 3rd 50-point game of the season, and obviously the 1st 70-point game of his career. He is putting on a show each and every night. In this game, he just took it to another level.
Joel Embiid has established himself as one of the greatest players in Sixers' history. And now he will be in the history books until someone can score 71 for them.

The Sixers came into this season with lower expectations than they have had in a while. Their 5th second round exit, compounded with the James Harden drama, had Sixers vibes the lowest they have been since the Process years. But even those at least had hope for the future. It was so bad there were some fans ready to blow it all up and start over again. But thankfully the Sixers did not do that. Because it turns out this has actually been one of the most fun seasons we have had in recent memory. The team Daryl Morey put together is playing fantastic basketball right now.
Joel Embiid is playing the best ball of his career. Tyrese Maxey has blossomed into a star player. Tobias Harris is playing great team ball. And between Nico Batum, Marcus Morris, and Pat Beverley, they have one of the best groups of role players we have seen in the Embiid era. The Sixers are currently the 3 seed in the East and the 5th seed overall in the NBA.
Yesterday, we had a chance to sit down and talk with Team President Daryl Morey. Bob Cooney, Andrew Salciunas, and Tyrone Johnson broadcasted live from the 6th Annual Sixers Youth Foundation Gala. The team celebrated "50 years of Hip-Hop" while raising money for local kids in need. We were joined by multiple Sixers guests, and one of our first guests on the special broadcast was Daryl Morey.
He talked about how well Embiid is playing, the growth of Maxey, the job Nick Nurse has done, his plans for the trade deadline, and more. And if you missed it, or would just like to hear what he had to say again, we have you covered.
