Howie Roseman Continues To Be A Source Of Toxicity For The Eagles
Eagles Twitter has been abuzz this morning because of a story claiming some people in the Eagles building are sick of Jalen Hurts. I have no sources in the Eagles locker room to defend that reporting, or to disprove it. It may be the case, it may not be. But there is a larger problem at hand. Something perhaps worse than that story being true would be. Howie Roseman has turned the Eagles into a toxic organization.
For years now, going back before Jalen Hurts and Nick Sirianni, the Eagles have had a major problem with leaks. Every time things go wrong, there is suddenly a torrent of leaks coming out pointing fingers for who is to blame. It happened to Carson Wentz, it happened to Doug Pederson, and now it is happening to Jalen Hurts and the Eagles’ current coaching staff. Jalen Hurts is only the most recent victim of it. And whether it is true or not, the fact it is being leaked like this, again, is a sign of deep issues in the Eagles building.
So who is the source of these leaks? There are only so many people who were on both teams. There are the players who carried over, like Jason Kelce, Fletcher Cox, Lane Johnson, Jake Elliott, and Brandon Graham. I find it hard to believe any of them are the type to shoot off anonymously. A few of them came out with passionate support of Nick Sirianni or Jalen Hurts. Jeff Stoutland is still around, but he does not seem like the type either. Let’s be honest. If we are going to point the finger at someone, it is Howie Roseman.
A Source Of Toxicity
Howie has at times been a great GM. But ever since he came back from being demoted by Chip Kelly, he has grabbed at power more than any other GM. He sits in gameplan meetings, plays a huge role in assistant coach decisions, and even reportedly has control over what players are active and inactive. Howie meddles more than any GM in the league. Often in things that he should have no business meddling in.
Even if he is not the source in this article, this type of toxicity has continued under his leadership. Three different coaching staffs hand-picked by him. The results have been the same each time. There is always infighting and anonymous finger-pointing the moment things start to go poorly. This is not how a professional organization carries itself. Howie Roseman wants to control the narrative at all times. But in doing so, he makes the Eagles a toxic organization the moment things start to go poorly.
Look at how they handled the Sean Desai demotion. Whether you thought he was doing a good job or not, he did not deserve to be treated that way by the Eagles. Look at how it ended with Pederson. Or how it ended with Carson Wentz. The first thing that happens as soon as the Eagles start losing, is people get thrown under buses. But one man always survives it and avoids the tires of that bus. Howie Roseman. And it makes you wonder if he is the person doing the shoving.
Something Has To Change
Maybe it is time for a change bigger than who the QB is, or who the head coach is. Perhaps the problem goes much higher. Howie seemingly has immunity because of his friendship with Jeffrey Lurie. He keeps surviving despite this being the 3rd time they have had this type of failure. But maybe Lurie should care more about how his team is being run than protecting his friendship.
This organization has serious problems, despite all the winning they have done. You can’t look at how they act, and tell me this is a healthy organization. And if a Super Bowl-winning coach can be fired, why can’t the Super Bowl-winning GM? Until that happens, the toxic culture will continue.
