5 Offseason Moves the Philadelphia Eagles Should Make
Philadelphia Eagles exit interviews will go down imminently at NovaCare as we begin the offseason. There are many staff members and players that will get ready to exit that facility this week for the final time. Jason Kelce was just the first domino to fall. His lack of presence within the locker room and organization is going to be a huge loss. Who else won’t be part of the 2024 season? I’ve got my thoughts on what should happen.
The Entire Defensive Staff Needs To Pack Up And Go
There’s no use trying to sugarcoat this one. The Eagles had their most impactful season defensively ever in 2022. The collapse of 2023 goes much deeper than Sean Desai. The Eagles made roster decisions that changed the trajectory of the plan, and it obviously did not work.
Going with an inexperienced coordinator was an interesting choice, but the move to Matt Patricia with four games to go in the regular season was questionable at best. I would like to see the Eagles remove the entire staff and add a veteran defensive mind. If you found someone with previous head coaching experience, that would be a bonus.
The Brian Johnson, Nick Sirianni Marriage Didn’t Work
Reports say there was a disconnect between Jalen Hurts, Brian Johnson, and Nick Sirianni. I find this troubling. How does a head coach who is supposed to be an offensive mind allow this rift to even exist?
The results looked on paper to be acceptable enough finishing seventh in points per game. What was easy to see is that the situational play-calling was atrocious. Selling the Philly fan base on a reunion in 2024 would be very difficult. I’d like to see Johnson chase his coaching dreams elsewhere. Hurts needs a teacher, not a friend in that job.
The Defense Needs To Get Younger
Doubling down on two cornerbacks over 30 years old made no sense to me. The Eagles also re-signed Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham last offseason. They allowed younger, talented players to exit. The secondary was constantly exposed, and the linebackers were horrendous. You can’t go into next season without rejuvenating the defense. This years draft will be a great place to start.
Nick Sirianni Should Stay
With competent coordinators, it appeared that Sirianni was the right man for the job. I would like to see the organization allow him the opportunity to have more tenured coordinators that could let him be the administrator he has been revealed to be.
This Team Needs More Than Tweaks
If we bluff ourselves into thinking this team just needs a little refresh, I’ll predict that next offseason will bring on a dramatic rebuild. If the Eagles aren’t bold this week and in the months ahead, the fan base will pay for it. This should be a final challenge presented to Nick Sirianni and Howie Roseman.
No @eagles injury excuses, this was coaching incompetence at all levels and obviously the veteran leaders were not able to rally the troops. A house cleaning is in order. The collapse can’t be explained.
