Could The Eagles Go After Bill Belichick If They Fire Nick Sirianni?
The best coach in NFL history is suddenly looking for a job. After 24 seasons, 266 wins, 30 playoff wins, and 6 Super Bowls, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are parting ways. This comes after they missed the playoffs in 3 of their last 4 seasons since Tom Brady left the team. But at 71 years of age, he does intend to keep coaching. And with a resume like that, he is going to be the hottest coach on the market.
There are currently 7 jobs open. The Raiders, Panthers, Chargers, Falcons, Commanders, Titans, and Seahawks. There could feasibly be more after Wild Card weekend if any of those losing teams decide to move on from their head coach as well. And even though he is coming off a Super Bowl, there is significant talk that Nick Sirianni’s job could be in danger. If they lose, it would mean they went from 10-1, to losing 6 of their last 7 games. With a collapse like that, anything is one the line. Especially when the greatest coach of all time is available as a replacement.
Could Nick Sirianni be fired?
We certainly can’t rule it out. Nick is coming off making it to the Super Bowl, so that helps his case. But they fired Nick a few seasons after he won it all. The only coach in Eagles history to win it all in the Super Bowl era, and they fired him for missing the playoffs once. Chip Kelly had two straight 10-6 seasons, then they fired him after one bad year. And this season, even with making it to the playoffs and finishing 11-6, certainly feels like a similar disaster.
Adam Schefter went onto The John Kincade Show this week. And while he said he does not think Nick Sirianni will be fired, he also acknowledged that these things can still change.
It is not out of the question. Especially if they get embarrassed by the Bucs the way they got embarrassed by the Giants and Cardinals. It would be an unprecedented move, but this has been a fairly unprecedented collapse.
Would Bill Belichick be interested?
Belichick is going to have his pick of jobs most likely. The only other coach on the market who has close to a similar pedigree is Jim Harbaugh, and he comes nowhere near touching the accomplishments of Bill. So the question becomes, “Is the Eagles job the best one available?
Well, they have the QB, which is a great start. The Commanders, Raiders, Falcons, Titans, and Seahawks can’t say that. But the Commanders will be high enough in the draft that they can maybe get one. The Panthers are a wildcard because of Bryce Young. He was the number 1 overall pick but had a bad rookie season. There are still lots of reasons to like him though, if you can pair him with a good coach and get talent around him. The Chargers have Justin Herbert. And while he has had some struggles, and his team has been a disaster, his talent is clear. If Bill wants to go to a team that already has a great QB, the Eagles and Chargers are his only options. Finding a QB has been his biggest problem outside of Brady. Chargers and Eagles already did that part for him.
What the Eagles also have is two elite WRs and an elite O-Line. Chargers have the WRS, but their O-Line is terrible. On the other hand, the Chargers roster on defense is much better. The Eagles have talent on the D-Line, and not much else. So each team has its pros and cons.
On paper, the Eagles would be the best job. Especially for a guy like Bill where his presence alone would make the defense better. The only caveat is Howie Roseman. Howie is a meddler. He meddles far beyond the usual role of a GM. He has been involved in assistant coaching decisions, he even gets involved in game planning according to some sources. And it is hard to imagine a veteran coach like Bill Belichick wanting Howie Roseman in the coaches’ room talking about how to best defend the Cowboys. And he certainly wouldn’t want Howie telling him who his assistant coaches will be.
So is it possible?
The Eagles need to fire Nick first. If they decide to keep him, it doesn’t matter if Bill wants to come here or not. But if the Eagles do lose on Monday, and the embarrassment of this season is enough for Lurie to cut ties, it makes sense. Hurts is exactly the type of player Belichick would want to coach. All he thinks about is Football, he is highly coachable, and will never be a distraction off the field. Bill would probably love him. He also wouldn’t have to move across the country. Lurie has ties to Boston. And they would be the team that is closest to being a real contender. All of that makes them an attractive job. It is just a question of if Howie would be willing to ease off.
If Nick gets fired, expect the two sides to be talked about a lot. National Shows are already throwing the idea out there.
