The Bucs Defense Is Tailor Made to Exploit The Eagles Greatest Weakness
The secret is out on how to defend the Eagles. Blitz them. If that was not already abundantly clear, the Giants made sure it was in week 18. They blitzed the Eagles more than any team had blitzed any other team all season long. And the Eagles had no answer for it. They kept doing the same things over and over, despite play after play being broken up by an unblocked pass rusher. And Nick Sirianni’s answers after the game and on the next day about their lack of adjustment to the blitzing inspired no confidence whatsoever.
Everyone knew going into the game the Giants would blitz at a heavy rate. It is Wink Martindale’s style. And the Eagles clearly went into the game intending to win. Otherwise, they would not have played their starters and gotten some of them hurt. But despite that, they still had no answer for the blitz-heavy scheme everyone knew was coming.

The good news is they don’t have to play the Giants in the playoffs, who lead the league in blitz at the heaviest rate in the NFL. No, instead they will play the Bucs, who blitz at the 3rd heaviest rate.
On paper, the Bucs are one of the worst teams in the playoffs. So it should be the ideal matchup. But they may also be one of the best teams to attack the Eagles’ achilles heel. They are already known for how much they blitz, but they will likely lean on that even more this week. And why not? the Eagles have shown time and time again that they have no answer for stopping it.
The Bucs are not a good team. But neither were the Giants. And the Giants’ mediocre defense was able to embarrass the Eagles solely by blitzing as much as they did. And unless Nick Sirianni has suddenly learned how to counter a blitz this week, there is no reason to expect the results will be any different on Monday night vs a defense that is better than the Giants.
