Eagles Fans Need To Shut Up When The Offense Is On The Field
In a recent article by Marcus Hayes in the Philadelphia Inquirer, several Eagles players complained about how loud fans have been when they are on offense at home. That includes players like Jordan Mailata, Jason Kelce, and Landon Dickerson. It has gotten to the point that they have even used silent counts in their own stadium.
In the Giants game, Hurts had to quiet fans down because they were chanting “Run the Ball” so loud that he couldn’t change plays at the line of scrimmage. And Nick Sirianni spoke about how loud those chants were after the game.
“I think I’d hear that even if I had a double headset on. I hear ya, but sometimes you got to let Jalen make some calls at the line of scrimmage. So, maybe get that chant going, and then Jalen’s gotta quiet them down.”
Hurts also had something to say about how loud the fans were.
Ignoring that the chant itself was dumb (it was 2nd and 20 they were not going to run the ball), just the fact that fans were being that loud while the Eagles’ offense was on the field is dumb on its own.
…
Now are the optics of putting blame for some of the poor play on offense bad? Sure. Are there more issues than just the fans being too loud? Yes. But that doesn’t change the fact that they are right.
The rule has always been to get as loud as you can when the defense is on the field, but be quiet before the snap on offense. That is the rule at every level of Football. From pee wee to the pros, you shut up when your offense is on the field. You can cheer when a play is made, but then quiet down before the ball is snapped.
The whole point of being so loud is to throw the offense off so they can’t hear the cadence or make any changes at the line. That is part of the advantage you get as the home team. But the Eagles are not getting that advantage right now. In fact, they are being disadvantaged by their own fans. There have been a slew of false starts at home. And it makes it hard for Jalen Hurts to call audibles because the rest of the team can’t even hear what he is saying.
So to Eagles fans, shut up. Go crazy when the defense is on the field. But when the Eagles are on offense, zip it. You are hurting the team. They have enough issues without having to go with a silent count in their own building. Don’t get in your feelings just because the team called you out. This is Football 101 every fan going to games should already know.
We want to say we are a smart fanbase. But we are not acting like one right now.
