Matt Patricia Takes Over Play Calling Duties For The Eagles Defense
The Eagles defense has been a bit of a mess this season. They are bottom 10 of the league in almost every defensive category. And in the last 3 weeks, they have struggled to do so much as get a stop. A lot of that can be attributed to a lack of talent on the backend. The Eagles lost all 4 starters at LB and Safety, and the players who replaced them have not been playing very well. But it seems the Eagles are turning to drastic measures to fix things. Matt Patricia will take over playcalling duties on defense in place of Sean Desai.
…
It is not yet clear what Sean Desai’s new role with the team will be. But this is not the type of move 10-3 teams usually make. It’s the type of move a team on the ropes usually makes. And while the Eagles are technically still in a good place standings-wise, it does feel like they are on the ropes. They are coming off of two blowout losses to the exact teams they would have to beat to get back to the Super Bowl. And while the offense has sputtered, a lot of the reason for that falls on the defense.
With the trade deadline in the past, they can’t add talent. So the only other way to shake things up for the defense was to change play callers. In comes Matt Patricia. He has been serving as a senior defensive assistant since he joined the Coaching Staff in the offseason. Now he will call plays and essentially serve as the Defensive Coordinator. The last time he was DC, with the Patriots, his defenses were top 10 in points allowed for 6 straight seasons. Good enough to get him the Head Coach job with the Lions, where he only lasted 3 seasons. But now he will get another chance to run a defense with the Eagles.
It should be stated that Patricia and Darius Slay have beef from back when he coached the Lions. The two seemed to bury the hatchet when he was hired by the Eagles this summer. Slay will be out for the next couple of weeks though while he recovers from surgery.
