Phillies Shutout Braves in Game 1 for 1-0 NLDS Lead
The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-0 in Game 1 of the National League Division Series (NLDS). The offense came up with a few key timely hits, but it’s the pitching that deserves the credit for stealing Game 1 at Truist Park.
Phillies Shut Down Braves in Game 1
The Braves mashed 307 home runs during the regular season, tying an MLB record. A team slugging percentage over .500 makes most opponents cringe, but the Phillies didn’t waver.
Ranger Suarez blanked the Braves for 3 ⅔ innings. Jeff Hoffman, Seranthony Dominguez, Jose Alvarado, Orion Kerkering, Matt Strahm, and Craig Kimbrel survived scare after scare to blank the best offense in the majors.
The untimely no-show was Atlanta’s first home shutout of the 2023 season.
Whether it was the slumping star like Dominguez, the secret weapon like Kerkering, or the legendary closer like Kimbrel, the Phillies had an answer every time the Braves threatened.
It certainly didn’t hurt that Trea Turner started off one of the most timely double plays you’ll ever see in an MLB playoff game.
Phillies Up 1-0
The fear of superstardom is a real threat to the Atlanta Braves. Bryce Harper scored the first run of the game, and he put the Phillies up 2-0 with a solo home run in the sixth inning. The $330 million man finished 2-2 with two walks and two runs scored. He continues to prove he’s worth every single penny of a contract that now somehow seems like a bargain.
The Phillies got their third run in the eighth inning when J.T. Realmuto advanced to first base on a catcher interference call. Fans at Truist Park threw beer cans on the field in frustration.
NLDS Continues
Rob Thomson and the Phillies will send their ace Zack Wheeler to the mound for Game 2 on Monday, Oct. 9 at 6 pm. The Braves will turn to left-hander Max Fried in a desperate situation to keep a 104-win season from sinking down the drain.
