Phillies Sweep Marlins, Advance to NLDS to Face Braves
The Philadelphia Phillies booted the helpless Miami Marlins right out of Citizens Bank Park with a 7-1 laugher in Game 2 of the National League Wild Card Series. The victory finished off the sweep to advance to the National League Division Series to face the Atlanta Braves.
Phillies Roll Marlins in Game 2
It looked like a tight pitchers’ duel in the early innings. Braxton Garrett struck out four of the first seven Phillies hitters he faced. Meanwhile, Aaron Nola settled into a rhythm for the home team.
The Marlins made the Red October crowd at Citizens Bank Park sweat for a moment with a man on second base in the third inning. However, Nola picked off Jon Berti, who led the majors in stolen bases in 2022, to turn the momentum back toward the Phillies.
Kyle Schwarber drove home Cristian Pache in the bottom of the third inning. The Phillies chased Garrett out of the game shortly after he looked unhittable out of the gates.
When J.T. Realmuto homered off former Phillies reliever David Robertson in the fourth inning, the home crowd could feel a sense of comfort. The Phillies were the better team, and they weren’t messing around by letting the a team (supposedly) prone to dramatic comebacks force a decisive Game 3.
Bryson Stott still needed to light the building on fire. His grand slam in the sixth inning was the first for the Phillies in the postseason since Shane Victorino in the 2008 NLDS.
Nola cruised through seven shutout innings, scattering three hits and rolling two key double-play balls. Orion Kerkering and Gregory Soto finished off the final two frames to clinch the series.
NLDS vs. Braves
The Phillies will travel to face the Atlanta Braves for Game 1 on Saturday, Oct. 7. The best-of-five series will return to Citizens Bank Park for Games 3 and 4.
The NL East champs finished with the best record in the majors at 104-58. They blasted 307 home runs, tying an MLB regular-season record. However, they’re about to face a dangerous team that eliminated them in the NLDS last October.
