Eagles Remain Undefeated, But Stress All Of Us Out In Win Today
Well, that was way more stressful than it needed to be. Eagles are 4-0 but at the expense of the blood pressure of everyone in the Delaware Valley. They pulled out a 34-31 OT win over the Commanders thanks to a game-winning 54-yard FG by Jake Elliott. But on the way to that win, they trailed for much of the game and then blew a late 31-24 lead thanks to a last-second TD.
Let’s start with the positives since they are after all 4-0. Jalen Hurts threw the ball as well as he has all season long. 319 yards and 2 TD, including a deep shot to AJ Brown late in the game. He made several incredibly impressive throws, and the offense wound up scoring 34 points.
The negative was everything going on with the defense. 31 points allowed to an offense that had struggled for much of the season. Sam Howell looked way too comfortable throwing into this zone defense. Especially on that final drive when they got the ball back with 1:43 left, and somehow managed to go down the field and tie the game. It looked like the defense would get the stop when Nicholas Morrow’s 3rd sack of the game put them into 3rd and 17. But Washington got 15 yards on one play, and 16 on the next to convert, eventually scoring a TD on the drive.
There was also some very questionable decision-making. The Eagles probably could have run the clock out late in the 4th and attempted a game-winning kick. Instead, they took a deep shot and scored with lots of time still on the clock. It is hard to complain too much about that, since it gave them the lead. But it leaves you think if they would have been better off being conservative there. There was also a baffling play call earlier in the second half where Brian Johnson called a run by Kenny Gainwel on 3rd and 11 in the RedZone.
But it is important to again specify, the Eagles are 4-0. They won the game. And unlike in College Football, there are no style points here. There was a lot of concerning g play in the game. But they won anyway. And we saw this week the Dolphins fall, with the 49ers yet to play. So at worst, the Eagles are one of the final two undefeated teams in the league.
Did today’s win take a year off all of our lives? Sure? Will there be a lot of hoarse voices in the office tomorrow after how much we yelled at the TV? Absolutely. But they won. And that is all that really matters for now.
