Celebrate the 3-0 Eagles Without Ignoring Their Flaws

The Philadelphia Eagles are one of three NFL teams to start 3-0. It's only the 11th time in their 90-year history that they've started 3-0. This is the second consecutive season with this luxury.

What does this start mean for the Eagles and for the rest of the NFL? Let’s review a few of the highlights and lowlights.

Only 11 Eagles seasons have started 3-0

The success or lack of success of those seasons is the real talking point.  In 2022 and 2004, the Eagles gave themselves an early cushion and rode it to home-field advantage in the NFC.

It led to a Super Bowl defeat in both of those seasons, but you can’t win a title if you never play for one. Overall, in the previous 10 completed seasons, they missed the playoffs four times. In 2016, they ultimately went 7-9 under Doug Pederson. Chip Kelly won his first three in 2014 on the way to a 10-6 finish.

The Eagles' first 3-0 start was in 1949. They won a championship that season!

Only 3 NFL teams are 3-0

The Miami Dolphins in the AFC and the San Francisco 49ers are the only other teams that remain unbeaten.

Philly will get their chance to test themselves against both of these clubs. The Dolphins come to the Linc on October 22, and the 49ers will travel to Philadelphia in Week 13 in December. Those games will get tremendous hype, and they will be potentially their best measuring sticks.

The Eagles are 7th in scoring offense through 3 weeks

When you score 28 points per game, there shouldn’t be a lot of grousing.

How much have we truly seen of the offense being dominant through the air? This was a team that was supposed to have a high-flying passing attack. That clearly isn’t working right now.

It’s great to see the dominant rushing attack. They are currently second in rushing yards. They are 23rd in passing yards. Brian Johnson has to fix that quickly. It was great winning games just running the ball in 2021, but that isn’t supposed to be the reason this team wins.

Sean Desai has that defense rolling

Despite missing key cogs from last year's NFC Championship team, Sean Desai is making his presence known. He’s incorporating young players like Jordan Davis, who has finally arrived, and Jalen Carter. This team is ascending defensively. Could they actually end up better than last season?

It's better to be undefeated

You’ve got the Dallas Cowboys coughing up a conference win while the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills have already fallen. The Cincinnati Bengals already have lost twice. As Andy Reid once said, “Enjoy the win.” However, don’t be blind about how this team needs to continue to improve.

The Philadelphia Eagles are one of three NFL teams with a 3-0 record. They will return home in Week 4 of 2023 NFL season to face the Washington Commanders at Lincoln Financial Field.

The defending NFC champs defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium in Week 3.

Philadelphia Eagles Defeat Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Eagles dominated Tampa Bay on Monday Night Football. A fearsome defensive front led by Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis wreaked havoc on the helpless home team. The Philadelphia fans invaded the stadium with a loud and proud takeover.

Jalen Hurts took steps forward with a stronger passing performance. He threw for 277 yards, but some missed throws and two interceptions still leave some room for improvement.

Nick Sirianni just keeps on winning. After a 2-5 start to his career as a head coach, he has won 26 of 34 games.

The Eagles will enter as 8.5 point favorites against Washington in Week 4.

Projected Philadelphia Eagles Week 4 Starters

The Eagles still face some injury concerns as they return to Philadelphia to face the Commanders. Avonte Maddox will miss the remainder of the season. Josh Jobe started as the outside cornerback opposite Darius Slay in Week 3. James Bradberry slid to the slot to play the nickel position.

Nicholas Morrow came up from the practice squad to start in Week 2. He has seamlessly jumped in with a strong game against the Vikings and a big tackle for a safety against the Buccaneers.

Reed Blankenship stepped back into the starting lineup after missing the Week 2 game against Minnesota. Sydney Brown might figure into the rotation more on defense, but Justin Evans will likely hold the other starting safety position if he's healthy.

Injury news that affects the Eagles Week 4 starters will trickle out as the week moves along. The quick turnaround following Monday Night Football will force Sirianni to act quickly.
