It’s probably been a long time since most people reading this have ever even considered going streaking, let alone done it. In 1974, the reported largest streaking event happened on the campus of the University of Georgia with 1,574 participants! For this exercise, I’m only interested in whether Philadelphia Phillies winning streaks compare to the two top teams in the National League.
You may think the ability to streak isn’t that important. Let’s see how the Phillies match up in the ability to get hot and more importantly: avoid getting cold.
Winning Streaks
Braves Understand Winning Streaks Well
The Braves know all about how to get a winning streak going. They have three long winning streaks this season alone.
- 1 - 9-game winning streak
- 2 - 8-game winning streaks
- 1 - 7-game winning streak
Dodgers Have Best Winning Streak, Still Trail Braves
The Dodgers have the best individual winning streak but trail Atlanta's totals.
- 3 - 6-game winning streaks
- 1 - 11-game streak
Phillies Winning Streaks
- 2 - 6-game winning streaks
- 1 - 5-game streak
Verdict
The Braves and Dodgers obviously are either more talented or more focused. They both know how to sustain winning streaks and to beat up on weaker competition. That’s mental toughness over 162 in my book.
Losing Streaks (4-game streaks as the baseline)
Braves Can Stop The Bleeding
3 - 4-game losing streaks
Dodgers Are Masters of Avoiding Long Losing Streaks
1 - 4-game losing streaks
Phillies Need A Tourniquet
- 2 - 4-game losing streaks
- 2 - 5-game losing streaks
- 1 - 6-game losing streaks
Verdict
When things go wrong for the Phillies, they tend to linger. The good news? They have avoided the longer streaks after the All-Star Break. Things are improving.
Final Thoughts
You may not think sustaining winning streaks or avoiding losing streaks is that big a deal.
I’ll tell you that getting hot and staying hot is one of the most important things in the postseason. How did the Phillies get to the 2022 World Series?
- They started the playoffs with a 3-game winning streak to dump the Cardinals in the Wild Card series, and it extended to an opening win in a 5-game series against Atlanta.
- After a loss in Game 2 of the NLDS, another 3-game game winning streak eliminated the Braves in the NLDS and gave the Phillies a Game 1 victory in the NLCS against the San Diego Padres.
- After a loss in Game 2 of the NLCS, an impressive 4-game winning streak grabbed them the National League pennant and then delivered another road victory in Game 1 of the World Series against the Houston Astros.
You have to avoid the losing streaks. Unfortunately, a 3-game losing streak cost them the 2022 World Series.
The Phillies could use some sustained winning in the final weeks of the season. They backed into the playoffs last year going 4-8. They shouldn't just “hope” they can turn it on out of nowhere again!

Hollywood couldn't write a better story than the Philadelphia Phillies' no-hitter game on August 9, 2023. Game 3 in the series against the Washington Nationals could not have gone any better.
The Philadelphia Phillies are going through a very positive phase right now, kicked off by the city's rally behind a struggling Trea Turner.
On August 9, the team made magic. The game was a no-hitter, but more noteworthy things happened in the same game. For one, Nick Castellanos hit two home runs, hitting 200 overall career home runs.
Another highlight was the home run hit by Weston Wilson in the second inning. Wilson, at 28 years old, hit his first major league home run during his first-ever major league at-bat. How amazing is that? The Phillies called Wilson up from the minors just days prior. On the third pitch Wilson saw, the left fielder hit one into the seats in left-center. His teary-eyed family watched on.
Then, in his home debut for the Phillies, just a week after being traded, pitcher Michael Lorenzen threw a no-hitter. This was the Phillies' first no-hitter at home since Roy Halladay pulled it off in 2010. Lorenzen's mother, wife, and young daughter watched on. Lorenzen said it became clear to him in the fifth inning that a no-hitter was entirely possible. By the eighth inning, seeing that Rob Thomson had not pulled Lorenzen out yet, it was clear to fans that it could happen, too.
Thomson, just before the eighth, gave Lorenzen 20 more pitches, with a warning to be "efficient." And efficient he was.
