The Trea Turner Discourse Has Officially Entered Stupid Territory
One of the very first on-air debates that Bob Cooney and I ever engaged in was one of perspective and how we viewed the Philly fan base. It was my contention that the fan base of the 2020s bears little resemblance to the fan bases of previous generations, but in many ways that was a GOOD thing. I cited some examples;
THE BOO BIRD SEEMS TO BE GOING EXTINCT
The jackass who goes to a game to stand and heckle and boo, thinking we all are entertained by their antics, is definitely dying off. Booing seems to now be shared for the collective effort of our teams and I fully applaud that. If the Birds are down 24-7 at the half, have at it. The relentless booing of individual players seems to be a thing of the past.
WE DON’T NEED STADIUM JAILS ANYMORE
Media members coming into town can’t harp on the jail at the bottom of the Vet anymore. The crowds at all events are more tame and based on league statistics we don’t stand out as a bad venue for arrests.
SPORTS RADIO CALLERS ARE MORE IN TOUCH WITH THEIR “FEELINGS”
The discourse on local sports radio regarding struggling teams, athletes, and managers is far more respectful and less venomous. That’s a great thing. I never have engaged in or preferred the old school “let’s tear this guy a new one” mentality and the personal attacks.
THE TREA TURNER SOCIAL MEDIA DISCUSSION FROM THURSDAY HAS GONE TOO FAR
If you perused Phillies fan Twitter (X) yesterday there was a movement afoot to give Trea Turner a standing ovation on Friday night. This is where we have officially entered the crazy town. There are GREAT athletes in this town who haven’t earned ovations like that until they performed and were worthy. It’s ridiculous that now we have a segment of the fan base who had gone so full soy boy that they want us to worry about his feelings and this would make him feel good.
Look, as I said before, I fully support the positive changes this fan base has displayed since the turn of the century. Targeting your own struggling players for torment always was stupid to me. Giving players a standing ovation for doing nothing is just as dumb to me. There isn’t a reason to honor Trea Turner. When he is introduced a polite, supportive clap is warranted. A standing ovation? Seriously?
TREA NEEDS TO FIX THIS
I don’t know if benching makes sense and he can’t be sent down to chill out in AAA and those are the most common solutions offered by fans. It may be a lost season, but we can hope he turns things around. One thing he hasn’t earned is adulation and hero worship. If you make things like standing ovations about nothing that is exactly what they will mean going forward.
