Philadelphia Phillies’ Wild Card Math Is Simple
The Philadelphia Phillies are in the heart of the National League Wild Card race.
It’s not 2022 anymore. That magical carpet ride that launched during a miracle 9th-inning comeback on that glorious, sun-drenched afternoon against the St. Louis Cardinals is a beautiful memory.
It’s time to recreate the energy, and the Phillies have 60 games to do it. Thankfully for them, you also can’t get a more mediocre five-team National League Wild Card race for three seats at the party.
Lurking Homefield Advantage
The Phillies will play 33 of their final 60 games at home. The San Francisco Giants are .5 games ahead of the Phillies. They have 31 of their final 59 games at home.

The Cincinnati Reds have 27 of their final 58 games at home. The Diamondbacks will play 28 of their final 59 in Arizona while the Marlins have 30 of their final 59 at home.
The Phillies have the most remaining home games and the second-best home record among those teams behind only the Marlins.
Philadelphia Phillies Wild Card Chase
The Phillies started this season with a horrendous 11-22 road record.
They have managed to go on a 16-5 recent road tear that leaves them at .500 with a 27-27 mark. Strangely, amongst the five Wild Card contenders, they are the fourth-best team away from home.
The Giants, Reds, and Diamondbacks are all better away from home, however. This makes you wonder how much home field advantage will truly matter for a Phillies Wild Card series in October to advance to the NLDS.
Mini Playoff Series on the Horizon
Down the stretch, the Phillies will have a few series to prepare them for playoff action.
- July 31-August 4: 4-game road series vs. Miami Marlins. The Phillies currently trail the season series (1-2), and a potential tiebreaker is on the line.
- August 21-23: 3-game home series vs. San Francisco Giants. A win in the series could be a huge decider for home field during the Wild Card round. The Phillies could send a message that they want to avenge the earlier sweep the Giants put on them in San Fran.
- September 1-3: 3-game road series vs Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers recently took two of three in a series in Philadelphia.
- September 8-10: 3-game home series vs. Miami Marlins. Expect this series to have big implications for one or both teams.
- September 18-20: 3-game road series vs. Atlanta Braves. The NL East leaders will follow the Marlins for four games in Philadelphia and, additionally, three games the following week in Atlanta.
Resume Vs. Playoff Leaders
In July, the Phillies faced the two best teams in the American League.
They managed to sweep the Tampa Bay Rays, who at the time had the best record in baseball. This week’s series victory over the Baltimore Orioles has them with a final mark of 5-1 against the two best AL teams.
Buckle Up
It’s going to potentially be a bumpy ride, but the Phillies have factors in their favor, including the top payroll and the postseason experience. Let’s see what they add at the trade deadline to bolster their chances.
