Should the Philadelphia Phillies Pursue Nolan Arenado at the MLB Trade Deadline?
Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals sparked some hot stove conversation with recent comments at the MLB All-Star Game.
The Philadelphia Phillies will enter the thick of a pennant race in the second half of the 2023 season. Dave Dombrowski will look to add to a star-studded roster, and another big name has entered the discussion.
Will the Phillies pursue Arenado? The John Kincade Show weighed in.
Nolan Arenado- A “Lamborghini”
Arenado spoke about his future at the All-Star festivities in Seattle.
“It is a business, right?… I’ve been traded once. I think that shocked a lot of people at that time…I guess it doesn’t surprise me anymore what happens in this game.” -Nolan Arenado
Bob Cooney also pointed out that the open acknowledgment of baseball as a business likely means Arenado’s agent has told him about the likelihood of a trade.
The 32-year-old Arenado has won the Gold Glove at third base in all 10 of his major league seasons. He is currently on pace to eclipse the 30 home run mark for the seventh time, and his .879 career OPS tops the pace of any Phillies player in the first half of 2023.
Connor Thomas likened the appeal of acquiring Nolan Arenado to buying a Lamborghini. It’s not about the quality. It’s instead about the price.
Getting the start as part of Tuesday night's #AllStarGame2023 for the National League squad, @Cardinals perennial standout Nolan Arenado made his 5th such appearance at third base. Potential Phillies Trade Package
What kind of package would it take to acquire Arenado?
John Kincade expects a “front-line minor league prospect” and Alec Bohm in play.
Andrew Painter has become a hot topic for discussion. His recent injury setback, however, means he’s probably off the table.
Griff McGarry or Mick Abel would be much likelier as a potential centerpiece of a blockbuster trade.
Bohm has shown major improvement as a third baseman and additionally solid versatility as a first baseman in 2023.
Even in a season when he’s hitting for average well, his .280 mark falls short of Arenado’s .283.
Connor pointed out that Bohm’s ceiling as a power hitter and as a fielder is simply not as good as what Arenado brings.
“Show me your other package.” Bob Cooney (???)
Should Dave Dombrowski Pursue Nolan Arenado?
Dombrowski has made aggressive moves throughout his career in MLB front offices. His track record of five World Series appearances with four different organizations didn’t happen with a conservative approach.
The Phillies have highly-touted pitching prospects like Abel, McGarry, and Painter. Their deep pool of center fielders within the organization could also come into play.
The Cardinals would look at Bohm as an appealing player in their long-term plans, and the potential acquisition of Arenado could drastically improve Philadelphia’s World Series odds in 2023.
Should Dombrowski pull the trigger to acquire a star player with the risk of hurting the organization’s long-term prospect depth?
