PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA – JANUARY 29: Patrick Johnson #48 of the Philadelphia Eagles tackles Deebo Samuel #19 of the San Francisco 49ers during the third quarter in the NFC Championship Game…
Deebo Samuel has become a villain in Philadelphia faster than most, especially for a player who doesn’t play on one of the main rival teams of the Eagles. He’s a San Francisco 49er, he’s only played the Eagles 3 times in his career, and has never scored a touchdown against them.
So, why the beef? Well, since the Eagles’ drubbing of the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game this winter, some members of the 49ers team – including Samuel – have been vocal about how differently the game could have gone. San Fran’s starting QB (at the time) Brock Purdy was injured early on in the contest, and from there it was a slew of injuries to signal callers and other players wearing red and gold. Samuel, and others, claim that if Purdy was healthy the game would’ve possibly had a different result, despite the fact that they lost 31-7!
Yes, the team that got absolutely worked by 24 points is saying injuries caused it. Just look at Samuel’s thoughts on the matter:
Ok, fine. You wish the 49ers would’ve been healthier. I get that. You’ve complained about this narrative for too long, but I get where it came from in the first place. As long as the 49ers and Deebo eventually move on, we can just let this go, right? Well, first of all, Philly was never letting this go. Not sure if you’re aware of this about Eagles fans, but we can hold a grudge with the best of them. Samuel and the 49ers were already going to hear it when they come to Philly on December 3rd of this year, but yesterday that hatred was compounded even further by San Fran’s star WR.

Are you serious??? Zach Gelb, a respected national NFL reporter and one of Philly’s own, had the opportunity to interview Samuel on his CBS National Radio Show. You can hear Gelb in the above clip asking the wide out about his comments about the Eagles and how he thinks the environment will be at Lincoln Financial Field this coming December, and then… Deebo Samuel hangs up?? Talk about absolute cowardice. If you believe something, you should stick by your word, not hide behind your publicist who tells Gelb that Samuel is heading into camp and can’t continue the call.
In Philadelphia, we might not give you love for talking trash on our teams, but there’s a level of us that will always respect a player who states their mind and stands by their thinking. Cowardice, though, has not and will never be tolerated here. If Samuel thought he was going to have a hard time when he visits Philly this season, he just made his, and the rest of his team’s, trip even harder.
