Pennsylvania City Named One of the Best for Birdwatching
Spring and summer are great times of the year for birdwatching. Actually, I enjoy birdwatching any time of year. Even in the winter, it’s beautiful to see red and blue-colored birds amid the snow. Now, one Pennsylvania city has been recognized as one of the best for birdwatching in America.
The study comes from LawnLove.com. “To mark June as Great Outdoors Month, Lawn Love ranked 2023’s Best Cities for Birdwatching,” they explain. “We compared the 200 biggest U.S. cities based on four categories, such as Access and Bird Variety. More specifically, we factored in bird species, checklists indicating birding popularity, and Audubon chapters, among 14 total metrics.”.
As for methodology, LawnLove.com determined certain factors, or metrics, that matter most to rank the best cities to get your birdwatching on. Then, they “assigned a weight to each factor based on its importance and grouped those factors into four categories: access, bird variety, popularity and conservation.” Then, for each of the 200 biggest U.S. cities, they collected data on each factor from various sources. So, they did a lot of research.
Before we get to Pennsylvania birdwatching, let’s look at the No. 1 city for bird watching in America. According to this study, it’s New York City, with an overall score of 65.91. The Big Apple’s score is much highest than the No. 2 city on the list, which is San Diego, California, with a score of 49.41. As for Pennsylvania, Philadelphia comes in at No. 7 on the list with a score of 39.92. It’s worth stating that a total of 24 cities in the ranking, including Philadelphia, participate in an Urban Bird Treaty Program with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. “These local initiatives help bolster bird conservation efforts by reducing urban light pollution, preventing birds from striking windows, and implementing safer nesting areas,” LawnLove.com states.
