Yes it is just the Nationals and the Tigers. But the Phillies have strung 3 good games together. The bats seem to be waking up. Kyle Schwarber is looking good. Trea Turner had a two HR game. Aaron Nola looked dominant in his start vs the Tigers. So is it just them taking advantage of bad teams? Or is this a sign that they are finally turning things around?
Jayson Stark joined The Best Show Ever today to talk about just that. Starting with what he saw from Trea Turner in his 2 HR game. Trea had been struggling as badly as any Phillies hitter to this point. All of his normal stats were down. But he had quite the night vs the Tigers.
“That was WBC Trea. It was Dodgers Trea. $300 Million Trea. And that guy was always there. I cant say I have broken down the video of what he did last night vs what he had been doing. But to me he looked so calm up there. Still, Balanced, quick. Would it shock you if the was this guy for the next 4 months? It wouldn’t shock me”
But it was not just Trea Turner who got some redemption last night. Because it was also a big night from Aaron Nola. The Phillies “Ace” has been inconsistent to say the least this season. but he took a no hitter into the 7th vs the Tigers, and was mowing down their lineup.
“When he has that much life off his fastball, he can be literally unhittable. He threw 45 4-seamers in that game. Do you know how many were put in play? None. He had 10 swings and misses. A ton of called strikes and foul balls. That is how good his fastball was. That set up as good a curve ball as he has had all season. The question is can he repeat this? Because he hasn’t strung together 2 starts like that all season… They aren’t winning anything without last nights version of Aaron Nola.”
While things have been bad for the Phillies, were they to figure things out now, they can still easily eb a playoff team. The hle in the NL East they have dug themselves into may be too deep to catch the Braves. But they can still be a Wild Card team.
“You would have a hard time of making a list of Wildcard teams in the NL and saying these 3 teams a re better than the Phillies… They have 90 wins in them, now they just need to go play like they are supposed to play.”
