The Sixers Need More From Jalen McDaniels and the Bench
This Sixers-Celtics series came with legit matchup problems. It was never going to be easy. That’s why I’m not overreacting to how the Sixers lost in game two. I’m mentally prepared for a wild ride of emotions. It’s 1-1 headed back to Philadelphia. That was the goal. I am surprised by one thing in particular though: Jalen McDaniels
In theory, he could bring size and athleticism off your bench. Someone you could rely on to hold his own. I’m not demanding anything other than serviceable effort and not losing those minutes heavily.
Through the first two games, he looks overwhelmed and overmatched. He was -8 in 11 minutes with 0 points in Game 1 and -11 in 12 minutes going 1 of 4 from the field in Game 2. Towards the backend of the regular season, it looked as if Jalen McDaniels turned a corner and established himself as a viable option for Doc Rivers.
…
Let’s look at Georges Niang for perspective. He was always going to have a tough time. His size and style of play doesn’t bode well with the Celtic’s strengths. A perfect example is when Niang turned the ball over at the end of the first half in Game 2, resulting in a major swing for Boston.
I had faith that McDaniels could provide more and it makes me wonder what Doc should do about it. I understand Doc giving Niang a shot, especially at home, but the leash needs to be super short. I’m interested to see how he performs in front of the home crowd. Considering if a few threes fall, the Center erupts. There’s a payoff with Niang that’s worth the risk in my opinion.
Going back to Jalen McDaniels, I didn’t see him being as much of an issue as he has been to this point. Is Danuel House an option? What about Shake Milton? Desperate times call for desperate measures. The problem is Shake has been buried so deep into the bench for a while now. I don’t have much belief in House either.
Is it too early to be going into desperation mode? What would you do if you were Doc?
