Phillies Place Darick Hall on 10-day IL, recall Kody Clemens
*Updated after new information about his injury came out*
Darick Hall will have surgery on his injured thumb and will miss a couple of months, per Matt Gelb.
The Phillies are now down two first basemen. First, it was Rhys Hoskins going down for the season with a torn ACL. Darick Hall was expected to take his place, but now he is also going on to the IL too. Hall jammed his thumb sliding into 2nd base during Wednesday’s game vs the Yankees. It is being called a right thumb sprain. His IL stint is retroactive to 4/6 and will shelve him until April 16th at the earliest.
It is a shame for Darick Hall. He was hitting just .222 over the first 6 games. But despite the poor production, there were some promising signs in his first 6 games. Notably, he had some impressive at-bats vs a tough lefty in Nestor Cortes. That progression will now be delayed.
In his place, the Phillies have called up Kody Clemens. Clemens will immediately be placed into the lineup at 1st base today in the Phillies’ home opener vs the Reds. But ou may also see some Alec Bohm at first, and perhaps even some JT Realmuto, depending on how Clemens plays. Clemens hit .319 over 19 games in Spring Training. But in his short stint in Triple-A, he hit just 2 for 13. He came to the Phillies as part of the same trade that landed them Gregory Soto

It is yet another injury for a team already dealing with several of them. Along with Hall, they are missing Bryce Harper, Rhys Hoskins, Ranger Suarez, and Andrew Painter. We recently got good news on the Bryce Harper front though. And Ranger seems to be close as well.
The good news for the Phillies is that Brandon Marsh is back in the lineup after being scratched from Wednesday’s game. He hurt himself twice in their lone win this season over the Yankees on Tuesday night. First he fouled a ball off of his foot, and later tweaked his ankle tracking a ball in center field. But while he could still be dealing with some pain, the fact he is in the lineup is promising. And they need him there because backup CF Christian Pache has struggled badly. Pache has looked lost at the plate and has already stranded 9 runners on base despite limited playing time.
