Jayson Stark On What We Should, and Shouldn’t Be Worried About

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – APRIL 04: Craig Kimbrel #31 of the Philadelphia Phillies pitches during the ninth inning against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on April 04, 2023 in the Bronx borough of New York City. The Phillies won 4-1.
(Photo by Sarah Stier/Getty Images)A 1-5 start is going to make people nervous in Philly. After getting swept by the Rangers, the Phillies went 1-2 in New York vs the Yankees. And today was yet another low-scoring game, plus yet another game where the bullpen had issues. So should Philly fans be worried? That is what Hall of Fame Baseball writer Jayson Stark talked about when he joined The Best Show Ever earlier today.
The first thing he discussed was the lineup. And while the lineup has yet to really get going, Jayson Stark was not too concerned that it would be a problem all season.
The same goes for the rotation. Nola had a bounce-back outing vs the Yankees, despite the loss. Zack Wheeler has more than proven himself. And eventually, Ranger Suarez and Andrew Painter will be back in the rotation.
But one thing he did seem concerned about was the Phillies' bullpen...
"Can you trust Kimbrel? Soto? Bellatti? Vasquez? I would say the jury is still out."
The bullpen early in the season has an ERA of 8.85. Not ideal. Nearly a run per inning. Granted a lot of that comes from a small handful of guys. But some of those guys are the pitchers they thought they could count on. Gregory Soto has given up 4 runs across 2 innings. Craig Kimbrel 4 runs across 1.1 innings. That said, guys like Jose Alvarado, Andrew Bellatti, and Andrew Vasquez have shut other teams down.
It was not all negative with Jayson Stark though. He was also asked about Alec Bohm, and seemed pretty confident that Bohm could keep up his hot start...
"There was something about the way Alec Bohm walked into Spring training that made you say, this guy is different... He is really quick to the ball, and hits the ball all over the field. You can now see why he was the 3rd overall pick. "
Bohm's slash line through 6 games is .350/.458/.600/1.058. He has 3 extra-base hits, including an HR off Jacob DeGrom on opening day. Not a bad start for the Phillies' 3rd Baseman.

Exclusive Courtside Photos From The 2023 Fanatic Knockout Tournament
The annual Fanatic Knockout Tournament never fails to bring us a great time at a Philadelphia 76ers game, interaction with some of our regular listeners, and fierce rivalries between hosts looking for bragging rights over the next year.
The Sixers took down the Dallas Mavericks 116-108, and Ryan from Collegeville took home the Knockout trophy after an intense game on the court at the Wells Fargo Center after the game.
All listeners who participated enjoyed a night at the Sixers-Mavs game on us and a fun time on the floor in a solid round of a game that brings (sometimes unexpected) intensity every time. Luckily, there were no schoolyard moves when a player chucks an opponent’s ball away to play illegal defense.
Tyrone Johnson worked the mic, and Connor Thomas was the last member of the Fanatic staff standing.
Tom Alvord, the station’s defending champ from 2022, elected for some load management by producing the Sixers game back at the station in a selfless effort.
How will the conversation between Connor and Tom play out to open their Sunday morning show?
