The John Kincade Show discussed the blizzard of Philadelphia Eagles news in NFL free agency during the St. Patrick’s Day broadcast from the Irish Horne in Richboro.
Howie Roseman is the architect of two Super Bowl rosters with two different head coaches and two different quarterbacks. He’s trying desperately to keep up the shrewd roster management.
John brought up Roseman’s approach to a long list of free agents in a little exercise by asking the guys to rank the Eagles starters in 2022 based on order of importance (1:08:32 on YouTube video below).
“Did Howie actually address the priority guys? -John Kincade
Eagles Offense
The positional priority quickly became clear.
“Howie properly prioritized Jason Kelce over… going after Miles Sanders.” -Kincade
The decision to let Sanders walk away lines up with the diminishing value of NFL running backs. It should be no surprise that the Eagles, who always prioritize the trenches, locked up a dominant offensive lineman with five first-team All-Pro selections in his last six seasons.
Pat Egan questioned how Miles Sanders rushed for 1269 yards in 2022 but somehow qualifies as the 10th most important player on his unit.
- Jalen Hurts (QB)
- Lane Johnson (RT)
- Jason Kelce (C)
- A.J. Brown (WR)
- DeVonta Smith (WR)
- Jordan Mailata (LT)
- Landon Dickerson (LG)
- Dallas Goedert (TE)
- Isaac Seumalo (RG)
- Miles Sanders (RB)
- Quez Watkins (WR)
It’s easy to see the value of quarterbacks, offensive linemen, and wide receivers in the eyes of the Philadelphia Eagles when you look at the full list of 11.
Eagles Defense
Defense was a little tougher, especially with so many rotating packages and snap distributions.
Haason Reddick unsurprisingly topped the list in the same exercise on defense (2:07:35). John and Pat were bound to gush over a former Temple Owl coming off a 16-sack regular season.
The bottom of the defensive list told us more about Howie Roseman’s offseason. Everyone knew to expect some losses in free agency. No teams reach the Super Bowl without the rest of the NFL watching their players and jumping on an opportunity steal a few.
The Eagles lost solid contributors in T.J. Edwards, Marcus Epps, and Kyzir White. However, they took care of more important priorities at cornerback and on the defensive line.
- Haason Reddick
- Javon Hargrave
- Darius Slay
- Josh Sweat
- C.J. Gardner-Johnson
- James Bradberry
- Fletcher Cox
- Brandon Graham
- T.J. Edwards
- Marcus Epps
- Kyzir White
Javon Hargrave will be the toughest free agent loss that the Eagles will need to compensate for, but the depth of the defensive line in 2022 was arguably the team’s biggest strength before an underwhelming performance in the Super Bowl.
Expect the Eagles to add a defensive tackle with one of their two first-round picks to satisfy one priority that Howie Roseman openly admitted on the first day of training camp in 2022.
“I think you’ve seen over the last few years an increased emphasis from us as a front office in interior pass rushers.” -Howie Roseman
With the fate of most of Philadelphia’s key free agents now settled, one major puzzle piece is still left on the board. Will the salary cap wizard figure out a way to bring back C.J. Gardner-Johnson?
An extension for Jalen Hurts is looming, but The John Kincade Show can’t help but praise Howie for the maneuvering he’s done during the first week of NFL free agency.
