Flyers Fail To Trade James Van Riemsdyk Before NHL trade Deadline
With the Flyers not being in the playoff mix, they were expected to be sellers at the deadline. And the biggest name expected to be moved was Veteran Forward James Van Riemsdyk. And yet, he will remain a Flyer, because they could not move the veteran forward on an expiring deal. Now JVR will leave in free agency, and the Flyers will get nothing.
The 33-year-old was in the final year of his deal with the Flyers. This was his 2nd stint in Philly after starting his career here. After 3 seasons here, the Flyers traded him to Toronto for Luke Schenn in 2012. But then in 2018, he resigned here as a free agent and has been a Flyer since. In his 14th season, he has 9 goals and 14 assists across 41 games.
James Van Riemsdyk is far from the player he used to be. But as a veteran forward, he still has some value as a depth piece on a winning team. He provides no value to the Flyers though. They are not a winning team, they have nothing to play for over these final games of the year. The process for the Flyers to get back to being a good team will take some time. What they need are draft picks to get young players. But at the trade deadline, all they managed to acquire was a 5th-round pick two drafts from now for Zack MacEwan, and a 6th-round pick for Patrick Brown.
At one point, Detroit seemed to have traded for him. But for whatever reason, that trade fell apart. And no other deal ever came together for him. They are a team with no chance of winning this year. And they didn’t even have all of their own picks coming up due to their past trades for Tony DeAngelo and Rasmus Ristolainen.
The NHL trade deadline was a failure for this team. Two minor deals won’t cut it when this team needs so much work. Chuck Fletcher’s future here was already something many fans question. Now the Flyers may have a very hard time getting the fans to get back on board any time soon after this. Fans deserve better than this. There is no reason for James Van Riemsdyk to still be on this team. Failing to move him before the deadline is a failure, there is no other way to put it.
