The Best Show Ever misses the mark on the Load Management discussion!
by John Kincade
If you aren’t checking out The Best Show Ever afternoons on The Fanatic you are missing out on some interesting debates. I love hearing the give and take interspersed with a couple of laughs. Then, the the topic came up. The topic that causes me to yell back at the radio like a madman while I sat in traffic on West Chester Pike. Don’t get that crew ever started on “load management”. It’s going to raise your blood pressure!
I wanted to address a few of the comments heard on the Tuesday edition of BSE and then respond…
If the fans want the players to take the regular season seriously, THEY have to take the regular season seriously! Tyrone Johnson
I was floored to hear Tyrone Johnson take this point of view. Wait, the fans have to take the regular season seriously? Why should they? The players are now routinely picking and choosing when they want to play or the organization decides to impose vacation days on them. I think the latter is bogus. You think the stars of yesteryear would have let the Coach tell them when they were playing? Jordan, Kobe, Kareem? Hell no! They were competitors and not desiring to promote a personal brand over the shield. When fans don’t know night to night who is deciding to play, why should they devote a focused energy?
If you’re a real fan, you are there every night! Ricky Botallico
I had to pull out my ear buds to make sure I heard that one right! The Phillies in their last championship run routinely had their biggest stars playing 155+. The biggest names played almost every game. Now we get told how grueling a major league schedule is. I don’t understand. Aren’t todays players supposed to be the best conditioned athletes ever? Then why can’t they play even close to the frequency of a star in Ricky’s era? It’s odd to me. The fans can’t be all in when the players aren’t.
My Point of View
First, I can’t wait till the next All Star Day to debate this with the crew live! Secondly, it’s the leagues themselves that are to blame for the fans not taking the regular seasons as seriously today.
There used to be a 48 team NCAA Tourney, then there were 64, now they hold amateur night play in games to allow 68 teams in.
The BCS Title Game became a 4 team playoff and now is expanding to 12 teams! It’s completely absurd. The semifinal games in the CF Playoff history average a margin of defeat of 3 scores! That is with 1 facing 4 and 2 facing 3. They now are going to have more garbage matchups!
The NBA, the kings of telling their regular season ticket buying public that they don’t matter, allow 20 teams in the playoffs! It’s a joke. You do t even have to be mediocre to be invited so of course the playoffs are what the fans focus on. Fog the mirror and you play in the post season.
Baseball just expanded to 12 teams and the NFL to 14!
It’s the corporate greed that has told fans, that tourney at the end is what really matters! Stop blaming the fans for things that are out of their control.
Join the Best Show Ever on weekday afternoons! I promise that they will elicit quite a reaction and some fine entertainment!
